A very interesting flavor. Umame and lemon.
I really want to try the Neolentinus pondersosus. I found it last summer but did not know what I had found and it was in a rehab area of the Willamette National Forest therefore I did not collect it.
That Lactarius I ate on Saturday was pretty good too. It really did taste like some really nice crackers.
And it is a friggin sexy mushroom.

ive also never had any boletus. my friend who got me into hunting has found king boletes a few times but all the ones i find are inedible or if they are edible they are described as tasting like shit making me not want to eat them

The hunting up there is too good to resist My wife has to work up there a few days a week so we go up the night before, she works and I hunt. I'm jelly of the lactarius find, there's a lot of species of milky in the east and one of the more common ones that I found, l. hygrophoroides, is one of my top edibles, they have a very nice crunchy texture and a sweet nutty flavor. Here's some of the things we found on our hike:

The hunting up there is really really great.
I love the whites! They are so meaty.

Just keep it up and I promise you will find some good boletes.
I might plan another group foray soon. I want to do some coastal hunting.

Might be, I was hunting with my 3 and 4 year old in tow and they were stomped into oblivion moments after that picture was taken, so I didn't bother with an ID.

@Joust, I'll give you a head's up next time I'm up, it's always a weekday so I figured you were busy.

Found some interesting Lycoperdon today, looks like perlatum but they are very yellow. Also passed by a ton of lobsters/chants and 3 clusters of COTW.

Would anybody be interested in a gathering/foray at Yachats Oregon on Oct 18th or 19th. This is the day of the local Yachats mushroom festival which is alot of fun. I am a local to the area and know all the best hunting grounds. It is very rich in fungi and a large variety of edibles.
We could check out the festival and score large hauls of edibles and see lots of interesting fungi.
Heres a sneak peak of what the area is like

If you are interested please say so i can decide if i want to host the gathering or not.

I love living in Oregon, even in city limits I've found a few edible species (however I've never eaten any) I plan on taking a hiking trip on the coast around October-November, know of any good cities/areas that have good hiking trails and cabins/yurts?

Nice finds man! I've been wanting to find blues real bad this year. I'm headed up the west side of the cascades this weekend. We will see.
What kind of habitat were you in? Tree type, age and spacing would be a huge help to me!

Mostly Pines and True Firs. Typical mountain habitat. Old-growth or mature 2nd growth forest. I was on the east side of the pass though, though I'm not sure if it really matters I just have had more luck with certain things on the eastside.

PeyoteZen said: This falls under the heading Cool Fungi I guess. (Unless someone can tell me it's an edible Agaricus or something?)

I like the last one because it looks like someone dropped a cluster of mildewed grapes on the ground.
Those "mildewy grapes" are all growed up now.

I've never been able to pick 5 lbs of shaggy parasols before, literally kneeling down in one spot. 10-20 minutes and I'm out. Eazzzzzzy money.
