First Timer, couldn't be more stoked! Need critique ~
    #18785736 - 09/01/13 03:13 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Okay here goes.
This was my first attempt to cultivate mushrooms. I used PF Tek method using Brown Rice Flour / Vermiculate. Ratio 2:1, then pressure cooked for 1 hour. Injected spores called Pink (I'm pretty sure pink buffalo), and I was astoundd by how fast the jars colonized and how perfect and rhizomorphic the mycelium looked. I once the jars were fully colonized I let them sit for a couple more days and then actually saw small little pins growing, I knew it was time to transfer, so I did, 4 days ago.

4 days later, this morning, this is where I'm at:

Literally, 18 hours ago that blatantly obvious successor of this batch so far was 1/3 that size. I was so exhilarated this morning to see this!

Question though. Why could there be only a couple good looking mushrooms forming on that one patty?
I know it's only been 4 days, but the two that are already grown seem almost ready to be picked, and there is no pins formed on the other 2 patties, or even more mushiness pinning on that single well off patty.
Why could this be, or should I just give it more time? And do I pull these mush when there ready and then just let it keep growing?

Also, why are they only growing towards the base of the mycelium patties? I'm using wet perlite to humidify, and I actually did not put a lid in between the patty and perlite. Just that original dry verm layer.

One last thing, what do the seemingly spikes of mycelium on that closer up picture represent? Just normal odd growth pattern, a contamination, or prep for pins?

I've been fanning out the CO2 one to twice a day.

Thank you guys for any help, I love the site, I love the ethics of what this is all about, and I feel eventually its innevitable for the general world to use mushrooms religiously for mind and spiritual expansion. Thanks again.

- very proud first time mushroom cultivator

mist an fan:thumbup: or build an sgfc the spikes could be an indication of low fae. also put those cakes on some tin foil. oh and if you dunk and roll it may help with the flushes. also whats your humidity and temp at? other than that nice shrooms:thumbup:

I just improved my setup a bit.
I added a 1 1/2 inch layer of water under the foil containers holding my patties/perlite, and added an aquarium air pump outside the tank connected to an air stone in the water to get some more air flow inside. I also added a digital thermometer/humidity gauge as well as an LED light to underneath the top of my lid.

Is this looking better than 5 hours ago?
Should this improve my FAE?

My humidity is 99% and temp is 88.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

Quick answer nope, try and get your money back. Don't leave still water inside your sgfc, it's a breeding ground for bacteria.  Remove the humidity gauge and your room should be in the mid 70's. High temps can also cause Bacteria.  Remove the air pump it just blows around co2 and stale air,  it doesnt add any fresh air.

My advice?  Remove the electronics including the hygrometer. Mist twice daily, fan for 30 seconds 2 or three times daily.  And in the mean time watch let's grow mushrooms it's free on YouTube from rogger rabbit and you can buy the whole set if you think this hobby is for you.

But since there's bubbling of the air pump attached to the air rock in the water causes it to be not still.. Right? I mean there is ripples in the water, constantly as wells as light bubbling.. On top of of that there is a less than half inch gap cracked open slightly at the top of the container for the hose to enter. Wouldn't it make since that with that said the CO2 that would otherwise be spinning around in the tub, would now be getting pushed out by that motion of air from the pump?

I'm intrigued.

And what are methods of reducing temperature when my room is in the 90's?

Absolutely will watch RRs videos though, thanks for that and the feedback !!!

Ditch the pump and hygrometer and start drilling holes.

After you watch RR's videos of course.

Just a tub with 1/4" holes every 2" in a grid pattern on all 6 sides filled with 4-5" of moist perlite, in a room with no running fans, with the chamber raised so that air can pass around all sides.

That is it, and it should never be anymore complicated than that.

Nothing mechanical or electrical, aside from a 6500K light on a 12/12 that you should have regardless.

This very thread pops up a few times a month.  Generally this is how it end, the OP storms out, never to be seen from for months on end.  Lets save the headache and the hassle.

Even if the water is moving and you have your airstone submerged you're only causing the oxygen to replenish by a bond that gets formed in the water column between Co2 and air bubbles.  Those bonded bubbles burst at the surface causing oxygen to be introduced back into the water.

The water is still a breeding ground for bacterial growth, even with an airpump moving it around its a cesspool plain and simple.

Airpumps have no place in mycology.

The easiest I can explain it right now because I'm a little high is think of like growing pot.  You have to have 3 fans right?  A push, a pull and a circulater.  This make sure all air is distributed equally and stale are build up is removed allowing the plants to flourish and not turn a nasty yellow from co2 build up.

Manually fanning for 30 seconds twice a day eliminates this need as there is some co2 build up required.  You will also miss out on one of the main pinning triggers which is evaporation.  You are denying your myceluim the ability to properly evaporate and bring in more water.

Reducing temps, can you get a window unit AC?

co2 will sit on the bottom unless fanned out or it seeps out through the holes in a sgfc.

on another note is that a kit? because i think i bought the same one when I started out lol.....get your money back:thumbup:

:smbfacepalm:

Co2 does not sink, nor does it settle out of air, especially in a FC with cakes that are constantly generating heat and humidity currents.

I hate when I see this from noobs, so now I will fix it....

Wrong.  CO2 is not like water which remains separate from air and will drain out the bottom.  The CO2 MIXES WITH THE AIR, thus does not 'leak out the bottom'.

Before you tell us to go to science class(I have two engineering degrees-do you?), you should go back to second grade to learn the difference between a whole and a hole.

Of course CO2 is heavier than air.  It doesn't however fall out of the air to land on the ground. A hole in the bottom of a terrarium isn't going to drain the CO2 out and leave air in its place.

According to my CO2 meter, far more CO2 is expelled out the top and sides than the bottom.  CO2 isn't heavy like water, so it doesn't just 'drain' out. Instead, it mixes with the air that comes in, and then flows out mostly through the sides, but also the top due to turbulence caused by the design, which takes advantage of minute pressure differences caused by temperature(evaporative cooling within the perlite).

The bottom of a shotgun terrarium is the 'intake', so if there's no holes there, you will have lower humidity and a higher CO2 level because less air is coming in to the terrarium to push the CO2 and stale air out the sides and top.

Okay. I have told my innovative mind to go fuck itself, watched RR's youtube series (1-4), and have altered my terrarium once again.

This is what I have done.

I lightly twisted those two mushrooms that successfully grew, off, and ate them. ....the taste of success is superb!!! Then I took those three mycelium patties out and rinsed in water, then soaked in a bucket of water in the fridge over night. I baked Vermiculate at 350 for 30 ,minutes, let cool, and then popped my mycelium patties in and rolled around, ( just like I'm putting bread crumbs on chicken for tenders ) and then popped those back in my terrarium, this time with wax paper on bottom of patties.

----> NEW TERRARIUM: drilled holes all around the entire tub, (except bottom because potential water leakage) then soaked perlite and layers in.. Worked out to about 3 inches from the bottom.

I boiled water then once cool funneled it into a spray bottle for STERILE water to spray the terrarium with 2-3 times daily. As well as me fanning out CO2 1-2 times daily, is there any other precautions to take, or should I keep the ball rolling for the next week and see where I'm at?

I love adding/building to this and LOVE seeing results, this is awesome, love the community.

Also quick side note:

When I took the patties out of the water this morning from its 24 hour soak period, I noticed the patties had darkened bluefish a little bit... Could this be a possible contamination and demise of my whole project, or dos mycelium bruise on the regular... Or what? O.o

Do all six sides, elevate the thing and spread a towel beneath it if you are afraid of water dripping out. Personally I only notice any leakage when the perlite is fresh from being rinsed.

Dunk and roll was good. Do what Kjetterfaen said. I understand you may be a little hesitant to add a ton of holes in an object meant to maintain humidity but you can cover holes if you need to (unlikely) but can't get MORE air in the holes you have. A fan in the room NOT pointing at your FC could help if you just can't bring yourself to dive into the full shotgun method, but you should.

I myself have recently returned to the art after living in an inspected appartment for 8 years and was quite taken aback at what is commonplace now. Better yet, it does work. Also read Frank Horrigans "How I Get Stuff Done" series. A link is in his sig. That and the RR videos seemed like a sweet blasphemy but shows that sin is in.

To be honest I was shroomy yesterday off those ^ and was rushing through. Also contams are a huuuuge concern to me. But damn. Really don't wanna take them out and fix the hole situation and use new perlite ... Room for contams..  May use this for the next week or two, then next dunk sesh, fix the hole situation. Thoughts?

And I thought this tek required a room with no active fan in the background of the room?

With all the holes a fan is not needed.

If your sub is colonized 100% then free air is your best defense to contams. It is counter intuitive but that is why it took all of us so long to start getting right.

There is also no need to use new perlite, Very little if any should fall out the holes. If this is a concern then get some vinyl screening for screen doors and lay a sheet in the bottom of your FC. You can get a roll at walmart in the hardware section for 6 bucks.

No need for new perlite, that same perlite will do, but you should get more of it and add some, should have 4-5" of it.

And fruiting is not a sterile environment, it is done in open air....not to mention fully colonized cakes are contam resistant.

Stop worrying about contams, and start building a proper SGFC.

You have to follow the directions to get the results. Im waiting on my spores now and all my plans and decisions are copy paste from a tek or someone elses grow on here. Getting to fruits is a damn good job! But to get the sick flushes just copy the people growing them.

Okay I don't want to specifically pick on you bro, but I do want to use you as an example. I really don't know what it is about these Teks that people think, "oh I can change this," or "that's not an important part."

I see so many new cultivators come on here and post their pictures and then ask a ton of questions about why they have contamination, or why their mushrooms look small, or "furry" or fat and short.

Follow the TEK"S there is a reason they work. They have been tried and the entire community of people over 30 years have perfected these process's, "Who the fuck are you to think you can change it for the better?" LOL I know that is not really the case and in most situations people are just making small adjustments because they have to make the TEK fit their environment. I do think this is one of the worst mistakes you can make as a cultivator. If you have to have a stealthy box under your bed so your mother doesn't find them, move out of her house! If you are hiding them from your wife or husband, just be open and honest it will always turn out for the best. Do like I do and claim religious freedom.

Sorry about the rant, I just want to clarify my position, if you think you might be doing it wrong, you probably are!

Yes....

You used the wrong sized jars and you did not roll them in verm.

Gravity is sucking all the moisture down to the bottom of the cakes.

This is why it is important to follow the tek, and use the right sized jars.

You chamber is also crap, so that does not help.

Following good teks will get you good results.

How often do you mist/fan the cakes?

Wait did I miss something? Why are they sitting on the perlite? What is the reason for not using foil?

I'm gonna smash these cakes and use them as spawn and try a bulk method with a PROPER sgfc.
But ... What's up with that guy cracking? All growing from bottom still, but what is racking of the cap before done fruiting a result of?

Also, I saw a tiny nat looking bug inside my chamber and took it out. Guessing it got in through a hole.. But is that a shit sign for me that these patties have grown other bacteria... And is it even plausible to transfer these patties for bulk grow?

No, I would suggest starting over using different fresh cakes...those cakes have consolidated and fruited already, you want to spawn young and vigorous mycellium.
