Appreciating music. * 2
    #18785178 - 09/01/13 12:55 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

When I was younger I used to do this. I'd sit in my room with my headphones on and let myself just sink into the sonic bombardment. Nowadays it seems I only listen to music as background noise whilst performing other activities such as internet browsing, or painting, or homework, etc...

I feel like I don't really appreciate music any more; like it just sort of flows through my ears and then half an hour later the album is over and I can barely even remember hearing it.

I remember once when I was still living at home I smoked a bit of marijuana and sat back on my bed and started listening to the Dream Theater song Octavarium. THE INTRO BIT TO THAT SONG WAS SO GOD DAMN INTENSE TO MY INEBRIATED MIND I HAD TO TURN THE CD PLAYER OFF AND GO FOR A WALK OUTSIDE. I still very much enjoy music but I haven't had a profound experience like that from music in a long time. It shouldn't take drugs to get that experience.

Right now I'm listening to the Lustmord album The Word As Power and it's pretty amazing BUT, I'm also sitting here typing this and so my attention is divided and I am probably missing the true depth of the music.

I also paid for that album because I respect the work of Lustmord and I feel like he deserves my $$ for taking the time and effort to produce a work of art that enhances my living experience. I've never really felt entitled to music. Downloading for free makes me feel icky inside, like a rotten banana.

The music deserves my undivided attention and yet I'm so busy multi tasking that I barely even consider GIVING it my undivided attention.

oh man the good old dream theater days!

i understand what you mean, i definitely find it hard to appreciate the music as much as i should now, perhaps some clean living and meditative listening is whats called for.

I appreciate someone who can appreciate music, seriously. They are hard to find. Like I'll hang out with friends or something I'll always be showing them new songs or artists just to see what other people think about it. It's hard to find someone else who can really get in to the nitty gritty details, too. I usually just start talking friend's ears off.
