How is growing edibles compared to growing cubes?

I'd like to get into growing some edibles, so I'm jwing the difficulty of it. I know it depends on the type of mushroom, I'm sure some are harder and some are easier, but not knowing what's out there besides really oysters (I see them grown all the time on here) I just don't know.
There are no stickies on this subforum, is there a good list of edibles along with the type of substrate they grow on? Do you start with grain like cubes? Any good resources/posts to get my knowledge base up? I know how to grow in general, I don't suppose much differs from cubes, but just a general list of them would be nice along with maybe some descriptions of their tastes and anything else relevant. How are the yields compared to cubes too, roughly the same/equally as variable?

I really need to pickup a copy of that book, I've just been deterred because I've heard there's so much incorrect information in it at this point and it's somewhat out of date, yet everyone always refers it still.

It still has really good info. And to answer one of your original questions, yes you still start with grain.

How it compares to cubes... I'm a good one to answer that one. Well there's always a new challenge or idea so better in that regard. Growing edibles will broaden your scope of mycology and cultivation. Growing edibles will also naturally increase thw amount of gear you'll end up with, and your ease of discussion publicly. This isn't always a good thing if you still grow the blue guys. Of course, I'm not really sure how you stop because obviously they're some of the most interesting and beautiful species, especially if you enjoy tripping....
Most edibles are grown on straw, or sawdust. People use hardwood fuel pellets often. Oysters will grow on shredded paper, cardboard, ect. Some species are hard because of certain challenging fruiting requirements. The method and substrate will depend on the species. TMC is geared toward large scale production and can make a new grower scratch their head at some points. For a brand new edible grower, I'd recommend pink oyster, pearl oyster, lions mane, or shiitake. Starting on pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets, and eventually working up to straw with the oysters. If you feel like experimenting with species, There is a very honest vendor here, ( the spore depot) that has very well priced cultures.
