(uk) why can't I find any?
    #18784222 - 09/01/13 05:59 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey today I decided to go on my first ever shroom hunt and I went over some local farmer's fields. I would say the grass was at least 30% dead (yellow) and the mud was cracked because it was dry.

I couldn't even find one shroom (magic or not) and I'm wondering why? Are the conditions not right or something? . Ps I live in the UK.

Go hunt 1-2 days after heavy rain, shrooms like dew.

The conditions are probably not right, it is also pretty early, give it at least a few weeks to really start getting into the seasons.

Alright thanks and does the habitat I have described sound okay? If not I have a protected forest I can go into.

Look for a water source, a wee stream or even just a pond or place where it sits long enough. The surrounding area should be damp enough.

The farmers land, has the soil been tilled in the past 5 years or more?
You want old, untouched land preferably that livestock have access to. You need the manure for fertile grass but if it's a small patch being churned up by cows it's unlikely.  Cows are still good though if enough space to roam.
I've an awesome spot that has loads of cows but they don't damage it too much cos of the space.  Goats/ sheep are better because they do less damage.

You say the mud was caked? Avoid places with a lot of mud, sounds like it's being churned by animals so your lib mycelium will get destroyed in those areas. Look for nice fertile open fields.  Head to the greener patches.

I've been up the mountains picking brambles in similar conditions and even when it's dry you can find damper areas that have plenty of growth.

If your hunting actives its not really wortwhile heading into forests. Libs are the easiest to identify and a lot more common.

Check out some of the threads people have set up.  There are some really good shots that show there habitat gravitating towards water sources or natural boundaries.
My first finds where near the edge of a cliff next to a waterfall. With natural boundaries reducing the amount of area for them to grow into they might be inclined to fruit. Same as a pf cake will fruit at 100% colonisation. Its a theory anyway but i've noticed them pop up a lot more on the edges/ridges of grass.

There's also a type of grass which they are said to prefer, can't remember off top of my head but look into that perhaps.

Good Luck!

Hey,

I'm from germany and I also can't find any shrooms. I'm living in a rural area and I know several Sheep and Goatfields. I've been searching for some days now but still wasn't able to find any. And I'm slowly beginning to lose my motivation. So do you have any tips that might help me with finding shrooms and sustaining the motivation to search for them?

Maybe conditions are not right for your area yet, it's been raining on and off by me with limited sun, below 15 degrees Celsius throughout the whole day and has been for like 4-5 days, I went for a little look today and the ground was really really wet, didn't see a single field mushroom, but plenty in forest/woodland areas; none active of course

Any hints on what to do? Do You walk upright until you see something that looks like a shroom? Or do you kneel and "scan" the ground slowly from there? Do you touch the grass and move it to the side so you can see under it or do you just "scan" with your eyes? Is there anything dangerous I should not touch besides Stinging nettles? What kind of pattern to scan for in the grass to see the shrooms?

It takes some people a year or two to find them. Patience is definitely required.

where about in the uk are you ? , up north id expect some to be out already ,  its quite possible your missing them , sometimes I can walk in the field for 20 mins and not see any and then all of a sudden you find one , and then before you know it there everywhere

once I get my eye in so to speak (shroom vision) im on the rampage hands and knees bizznizz (waterproofs and knee pads) , no-one iv ever been with has picked as many as me ...

there easiest to spot when theve started to dry out and go white they reflect in the light from certain angles if you crouch down , (especially if the suns out , as im harvesting one area iv already picked out where im goin next with the other eye

the field I pick in are inhabited by sheep so the grass is quite short making them much easier to spot , if your searching in fields with long grass , good luck finding many

Thanks for your answers guys
Btw, just to clean up a misunderstanding: I'm from Germany, not the UK(probably shouldn't have hijacked this thread)

Some of my questions remain unanswered:
- Is there anything I need to be cautious about except stinging nettles? Or Can I just touch everything
- Do you scan low(near to the ground) from the beginning or only when you have already found some
- Can anyone confirm that searching in shorter grass is better
- Any more tips/tricks?

my top tips are wait for low temps .. few days of good rain then go the day after in the morning (even if its still drizzling)

fields with sheep seem to produce more than others for me

Walk with the sun on ya back .. as you will not be able to see anything as the suns starting to get low in the sky

switch between techniques ... scanning meters out for white dots and scanning below in the grass by your feet

after the weather we have just had they should be everywhere.... higher elevations seems to produce more earlier .. as they see generally more rain and lower temperatures..

first frost seems to wipe them out where I am.

also learn about Cyanescens ... another common mushroom that growns in the UK on woodchip mulched flower beds from October onwards ... ridiculously potent shroom

patience is key! libs took us a month to find the first time ... my first ever cyans took me weeks of constant hunting

my first ever ozzy subs took me 3 months to locate.

your biggest chance is through patience and perseverance
