Help me ID these Northern Washington Mushrooms?
    #18783295 - 08/31/13 10:09 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I went searching up in a huge wood area, Near Packwood WA, I was wondering if these were edibles or actives (pretty sure they're atleast edibles)

I took pictures of the habitat, the cap, and the gills, No stems on these as they grew on a tree trunk.

Where they grew:

What the top looks like:

Mainly yellow with a goldish line going across it

Bottom(gills):

(you can't really see the gills) in person, the gills look just flat, hardly able to see any lining

Thanks for your help! :smile:

The color seems to vary greatly picture to picture, which makes it a bit confusing.

But i think it might be a Laetiporus species, Chicken of the woods.

Wait for a trusted identifier to confirm.

I did look it up, it's only threads talking about what they look like and what they are, I never saw anything explaining if they are actives or not, but I really don't think they are from what I've read

They are not active. Here's the top link you get by searching google for Laetiporus conifericola: http://bayareamushrooms.org/mushroommonth/ and it has good information.

No but it might be edible, if you choose to eat any only eat a small amount at first because they've been known to cause stomach upset. I've eaten small amount of them before without any problems to speak of but everyone is different.

I eat a ton of them without any upset. They are actually one of my favorites.

I have read they can absorb toxins from certain types of wood and should be avoided if growing on them such as eucalyptus and cedar, perhaps the reports of discomfort are caused by this. Another possibility is allergies. I dont know but i would hate to be one of the people who cant try them they are a great edible.
