Obvious satire is obvious.

The goodie-two-shoes Disney princess turned sex object meme has been repeated ad nauseum for decades. The Teenage Rebellion Industrial Complex has monetized and commodified Rebelliontm to the point that it poses no danger to their regime, and is quite profitable, besides.

"The youth will never rise up and overthrow us.", they think, "To what, then, would they twerk?"

Then along comes General Cyrus waging a campaign of total destruction on their precious formula, possibly breaking it forever...

with her interpretive dance symbolizing the relationship between the American public and it's corporate overlords.

I honestly thought it was for that, but seriously WTF how does having a hamster with a steak knife attached to it become a symbol for ban, strange occurrence.

She doesn't need to do anything to stay rich. She could stop now, and just be rich if she wanted to. She doesn't care about making more money from her performing career.

She just does that for the lulz.

This thread is hilarious because my sociology teacher on Thursday the first day of class asked; If we were tired of hearing about Miley Cyrus. Judging by the popularity of this thread definetly not. I obviously would never mention anything about shroomery in class so I said nothing.

Alright, I'll give you that. Guess I'm just offended at her total disregard for public decency. Its not sexy its offensive and slutty. And if u say that shes just reflecting who she really is on the inside,  and being herself, the n I guess that would make her a skank. Guess what. lulz.

I have not been brainwashed to think that. Sex for reproduction is the least important aspect in my own life.

When you're supposed to be performing showing your talents and all you have to get people's attention is acting like you're having sex, you're reinforcing the idea that women are only useful for their sexual abilities.

It's not that she was sexy that I'm saying is not okay (btw I don't think what she did was sexy at all) it's the simple fact that she relied entirely upon sexualization rather than talent. If she did the exact same thing and actually showed off her vocal talents as well, it would have been totally neutral in my mind. However, instead of showing off her own abilities in that part of the performance she was nothing more than a prop for her male counterpart.

It's said that "rock and roll" is really a euphemistic term for fucking. Sex has long been intertwined almost inextricably with popular music.  Even way back in the day when elvis first shook his hips and cameramen were nervous to pan back and show below the waist. Was Elvis objectifying himself? Was his provocatively shaking his hips a declaration that all he had to offer was sex appeal?

I think it's something of a matter of point of view, and I find it kind of surprising and sad that someone with a proclaimed view like yours would choose to look at someone like Miley in a way that demeans and objectifies, rather than empowers.  Maybe Miley, like Elvis, is saying -- "Look at how young, and free, and confident, and sexy, and 'in charge' I am. PS-- I know you want it.  PPS-- You can't have any."

I'm sorry-- but I just don't see what's demeaning or objectifying about that. Sure, it may look like she's selling her sexuality, but if her sexuality is a part of her music, that sort of does make sense. And personally, I find it more demeaning toward women to have the attitude of:  "You're wrong for exploring your sexuality in a way that I don't approve of."  How is using the old-world "women should be pure,
chaste creatures except with their husbands" paradigm in any way liberating for modern women?

PS-- To address the other question:  I've never really been all that attracted to her... or really even noticed her much, for that matter. But for some reason the recent antics have flipped me the other way. Which is doubly weird for me, because usually the "punk-y" butch look is more of a turn off than anything for me. But she somehow pulls it off.
