Yes, hello.  I see that the quality of this thread is in decline, but koods (awesome to see that you’ve been going to such cool shows lately, koods) posted something pretty cool a little ways back: that Fox News piece about raves that spurred Joe Biden to try to eradicate them.  There’s a funny bit of connectivity about that.  The reporters went to four Buzz nights at Nations to get that bit of reportage, so that means they were likely there when Scott Henry was playing.  Henry was a DC (and east coast in general) legend in the 90s, undoubtedly one of the most fun DJs to see at any rave.  In late 1997, Henry hosted a Buzz Christmas party, and attendees were given a tape that was appropriately named The Gift.  Coincidentally, The Gift kicks off with a track called ‘20/20 Translation’.  It’s a song built around vocal samples taken from an episode of the news program 20/20 wherein their reporters go to a rave in New Paltz, NY and film these bad little kiddies doing these bad little things.  The report was turned into a song mocking it, and then a couple years later reporters show up at Henry’s party and do the same thing, lol.  I thought that was neat anyway.

It occurred to me recently that it’s now officially 20 years on from probably the dankest summer of my life, so when I feel like it, I’ll try to post up the tapes that made that year so much fun.  The Gift, by Scott Henry, is definitely one of my favorites from the era.  It’s a fantastic blend of all kinds of house: prog, disco, funky, garage (pronounced “gairridge”, according to my across-the-pond homies).  There’s also some really sick breakbeats and even a couple big beat tunes in The Gift.  Just such a lively, colorful mix that momentarily takes me back some twenty years to a wild rave that I hope some version of me is always at.

1999 was definitely the dankest summer. I had a beach house at rehoboth every other weekend and when I wasn’t at the beach I was at Nation.

Nation was torn down to make way to Nationals Stadium. That whole neighborhood is upscale shops and condos now. It was an amazing club. Three stories of catwalks over the main dance floor, another dance floor in a side room and a third dance floor outside. Tattered couches and chairs for those rolling too hard to stand up. Or you could just flake on the floor. They didn’t care.  Friday nights was buzz and Saturday nights was the gay night Velvet Nation.

If you could put me up for a night on 8/16, I’d love to see Green Velvet!  He played at the first rave I ever went to in 1996, and I haven’t seen him since like 2002 (despite living just outside of Chicago for a decade).  Lmk dude, we can plan it out.

The OST to Stranger Things 3 came out recently, and it’s great.  Maybe the best one yet, certainly the most complex.  It’s more monochromatic than earlier ones, very dark and moody.  Some really beautiful compositions though.  They use some concepts and themes from the previous seasons, but imo this one stands entirely on its own.

Hi, I just found this really fantastic Boiler Room set by DJ Godfather that’s worth a listen.  Godfather is probably the DJ I haven’t seen that I’d most like to.  He plays ghetto tech, a genre that he was instrumental in creating.  If you’re not familiar, ghetto tech is very fast, with rolling/bouncing/chugging bass and kicks, a sharp high clap, and lots of sexually suggestive vocals.  It’s generally hilarious stuff.  I like serious music too (see my post above), but sometimes you need some silly, tongue-in-cheek stuff.

Godfather mixes very fast; he can sometimes sacrifice blend precision for the sake of speed.  But he’s mostly on point and can rip through like 75+ tracks in an hour, so it’s a lot of fun.  He also does a lot of turntablism- scratching, juggling, dramatic cuts, etc.  Pretty cool style that stands as a counterpoint to how most DJs usually play.

DJ Godfather- live in St. Petersburg 7/2017

hot remix of new telepopmuskik. love the kick on this, so dirty, so much going on there:

It has been very interesting seeing all the posts about nation and the fox5 expose. Never made it there, I clearly missed out. I have to say that for electronic music, DC is going off right now. Flash gets some truly killer djs and the underground happenings are lit. Boiler room just came a few months back, what an epic night. PLUS everyone is ripping on their pens or even passing blunts, the vibes are always right.

didn't get an invite to the Jeff Mills apollo party tonight, only slightly bitter about it....
