My Outdoor Grow
    #18776627 - 08/30/13 09:31 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So, I've tried on multiple occasions but I haven't had any luck using colonized grains to try to colonize an outdoor bed. Therefore, I am just sticking my whole substrate in the ground after it colonized inside.

I have had terrible trouble with bugs from snails, slugs, "roly-poly" bugs, pincher bugs, grub larvae, ants, etc and I could use some suggestions as to how to keep the critters out while also preserving the mushrooms so they can still be consumed.

I have heard of these few things:

1. Coffee grounds, around the grow in a circle or mixed in the substrate. A friend told me the coffee grounds have saved her strawberries from the slugs as they are strawberry thieves!

2. A saucer of beer, with a little bit of salt for extra kill effectiveness. Idea is they crawl in to gorge themselves on the beer and drown. If they don't drown then the salt will hopefully take care of them.

3. Sand or other rough material in a circle around the grow. Idea is that snails and slugs don't like the rough surface.

I have no idea if any of these work, the only thing I have to go off of is my friend's strawberry story.

Here are the few pictures I have:

This sub has been in the ground a couple weeks, you can see the snail problem I am referring to. Even this one guy that's chillin up top, getting his trip-on.

And a new substrate being placed into the ground this past weekend.

You can see I've got it in a pretty good place: right up against the house, under the bushes to protect it from sun and hard rain. Look carefully and you can see how bright the sun is on top of the bushes, along with a few spots in the shade where the sunshine pokes through.

I made sure to fill in the sides of the hole and put a dead leaf casing over the top, which you can see I had plenty to work it. The only thing I haven't done is figured out my pest deterrent.

My true mistake was cutting the trash bag liner, and laying it over the sides of the tray before placing the lid on the tray. The mycelium had actually started to grow along the bag, and therefore grow outside of the closed top. Maybe this is what actually gave way to trich. Who knows, what's done is done.

Thanks in advance!

I was hoping to hear a remedy sooner rather than later considering the bugs don't sleep.

Anyone out there know how to rid these pests?

Regarding rough surfaces and snails, I have always been told crushed eggshell is effective. If nothing else that is inexpensive to try... well, if you eat eggs. Other than that there is diatomaceous earth, isn't there? That is supposed to be really effective if you can get your hands on it.

The only thing I have personally used though is the beer traps. Stale beer, preferably in a container that harms them on the way in (ie. sharp beer can) and which is deep enough to drown them... and remember to clean it up often. Personally I think the beer-traps are god damn gross though hehe.

Good luck man, and sorry I can't offer much more than hearsay.

Thanks, I appreciate the input.

Luckily plenty of beer cans and bottles around my house and the frat house next door. They party every night... I don't understand it, they must be freshman.

I called starbucks this morning and asked for the grounds for your garden program so I'm headed up there later to pick up some fresh used grounds.. and FREE best of all.

I'll report back with my coffee ground findings!

In the meantime, here's a picture from this morning. A couple new ones popped up from the older sub in the ground.. Maybe that one is just starting to produce? Who knows, time will tell.

They are about 2" tall. And a baby pin about to come up.. looks to be small as well.
