Small Agaricus Kits
    #18780459 - 08/31/13 07:30 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi everyone, I know Agaricus Bisporus may not be considered a 'gourmet' mushrooms but I love them to death and they are perfect for what I'm about to ask. So I am part of an environmental group that runs little workshops with young kids (Kindergarten to year 5ish) based on improving their knowledge of the environment, sustainability, where their food comes from and things like that. I had seen many people growing Pleurotus species and a few other species on coffee grounds out of ziplock bags and I wanted to get some ideas on designing little kits that are around the size but would work well with Agaricus Bisporus. As much as I would love to introduce people to more exotic species, I have a feeling with younger children and their very uptight (High-end, religious private school) parents it would be best to do a familiar mushroom. So any ideas? Would coffee grounds work the same for Agaricus? Could I just fill ziplock bags with coffee grounds, inoculate them with spawn/spore solution and have them grow out the sides?

Thanks in advance for the help, peace

I sincerely doubt it unfortunately.  Oysters on cardboard/paper though...

Agaricus species are more difficult to cultivate and take more time to grow than say oysters or reishi.  Growing button mushrooms generally are cultivated on composted manure with straw, other compost may work and they can't grow on as wide variety of substrates as the wood decomposing mushroom.

Yeah, for what you want it sounds like oysters really would work a lot better.  Fruit right from a bag and everything.  They're not really that exotic, I think many/most people have at least heard of them.

They are such a pain in the but to get the air right though Forrester.  Shiitakes take a bit longer but IMO they are a lot less demanding environment wise.

True.  I guess it depends where you live.  Here you could set the block on the kitchen counter and mist every morning.  They grow outside with no monitoring

But if you're somewhere super dry, yeah maybe not the best idea.

Super dry here.
You have a very valid point though.

I know what you mean though, so many people trying oysters end up with super mega-stems and no caps at all.  Definitely not what you want!

They're easy to grow but not that easy to grow well, especially if using a fruiting chamber indoors...

Yep, exactly my point.  Seems to be oysters are kind of the goto recommend for first time edible growers.  They are quick and you will get results but they are not easy to grow well.

Yeah you guys have just confirmed my fears. Oh well, I'm sure if I just explain to them how to cook them then it'll be fine and I've got some Pleurptus Citrinopileatus growing at the moment so I'm sure they'd love to see the bright gold. Thanks for all of the input!
