Have you ever seen a giant spider in person?

The biggest spider I've ever seen was about the size of a bottle cap. Is it true there are giant spiders in certain parts of the United States? Have you ever seen one?

Yes they have Cane spiders here that get twice the size of your hands, but don't bite. Also, King spiders the size of our hand, they do bite.

That's probably the largets I've seen.. Well that kind, I've seen quite a few of them in my life (not my own pic, I damn sure wouldn't pick one up). Called Golden Orb Weavers. Live in TX for the record.

Is there some sort of repellent one can use to keep spiders like this away when camping?

Yeah spiders turn me into a pussy. I have a big leonotis nepetifolia (klip dagga) plant outside that's like 5 feet tall. I was trying to harvest some of the flowers off of it earlier and went to grab some and a tiny ass little white spider came crawling out and scared the shit out of me. I really want those flowers but I haven't come up with a way to get them yet without facing that little spider.
I thought about gloves but what if it crawls up my arm?!

Are spiders the creature that creeps most of you out the most??
If I had to pick one it'd have to be cockroaches. And a lot of that has to do with knowing that for every one I see there's a hundred I don't Yuck. Most other roaches don't bother me nearly as much.
Silverfish are pretty gross to me too. And millipedes.
I'm not too bad with spiders, though.

They have these fuckers everywhere in the woods around here. Their webs are pretty large and well constructed too. You tend to see them either a second before running into their massive web or during lol. They are harmless I believe though.

one time I went to take a piss and instinctively pulling my shorts down as I entered the bathroom, I realized I was in trouble as I looked up and saw a pretty big spider (maybe 6 inches in diameter) a couple feet above me. Unfortunately, I had engaged in urination right at the time of seeing this thing. Pissed everywhere. Literally, everywhere. I'm pretty sure I almost hit the spider. I backed off, got bread and a broom, and killed it.
I hate killing anything but when it comes to spiders, it's all about survival.

Yeah living in Texas. I see a lot of spiders, and scorpions.
I have a habit of checking my shoes for the things after a few weeks i had In the mountains.
I have a pet tarantula tho, and have had many reptiles and insects before
So they don't bother me much. It's the small ones that creep me the fuck out

I found black widows once on the oregon coast. In 20 years living here ive only found them once and i found 6 of them
We got the brown recluse and hobo spider that has a nasty bite, but wont kill you.
But i agree about the worst thing we have to worry about being bees Especially ground bees! Got stung 10 times a while back.
As far as the big ones go, ive seen some large wolf spiders and the brown funnel web spiders that look like hobo spiders. None of them get even close to the size of most spiders in this thread, maybe 3-4 inches tops.

I caught a black widow on the playground when I was in elementary school. I also remember one time when my younger sister and I were little, and I was big into the discovery channel, there were two black widows on the door of a storage room in the upstairs of that house. I told my little sister to go downstairs and tell our dad, but she was little and told him there were "Tarantulas" on the door, and he didn't believe her of course, so I just smashed them. We were really little kids. That could have been bad.

When I was staying with my friend and her parents in Perth, I saw a huntsman (kinda like a tarantula but with really spindly legs) eat a gecko.
We have a lot of these outside the house, but never seen one inside:

No it is somthing like a large entoloma or psathyrella species. It stood over a foot tall and was very impressive. I havnt been able to identify it to species after lots of effort but entoloma is a large genus with like 1000 species in it.

Down here in alabama we have these things called banana spiders. They get really huge, like several inches long or the size of a human hand. What's weird about them is that even tho they're really scary looking, they're actually really docile, so if you don't have any phobias you can just pick them up and let them slowly walk around your hand and they won't attack.
Black widows are tiny like 1/4-1/3" tops but I see them every once in awhile.
Spiders are just part of living out here in the woods

In here we don't have big spiders, but in Japan I saw lots of huntsman spiders, which get kinda big but are harmless&useful(they live in houses and eat pests)
Also, they keep cats busy

I'd probably run like hell
Fucking spiders, they're cool to view from photos and all, but IRL they're fucking creepy!

Hell yeah man spiders are hella creepy. Damn nature, you scary!
Check out this video I found. It shows spiders under the influence of various drugs and how it affects their web building. So crazy.
(Not sure if that link will work from my phone, if not just search youtube for "spiders on drugs" and it'll be the first video. Trust me you won't regret watching it!

I will tell you what exactly! In the age of dinosaurs the ancestor of mankind was a mouselike creature about two inches long. Among its predators were spiders huge and small. From that era we got two particular traits: the ability to get goosebumps and an instinctual frea of spiders.
Biggest spider I saw was in a hospital no less, on the floot near a crevice in the wall. Its leg span was the size of the palm of a hand (4 inches) and the body was the size of a really fat bumblebee.
These fuckers:

Its a relative of the Hobo Spider with a painful bite that leaves a welt, which mostly lives in houses.

Snakes too, maybe later on though.

Interesting thoughts on the origins of arachnophobia. Very interesting indeed.
