    #18781456 - 08/31/13 01:57 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I wish I had better pics, but I can take more if you need me to, but here it is:

Habitat: hardwood - yellow birch
No cap, stem, gills; it looks like a fungus version of cauliflower.
Location: Adirondacks, near North Lake on the Black River in the town of Ohio.
It smells wonderful.

and:

And here was a similar one I saw in the same area:

Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

Thank you all so much!  From what I have read, these are pretty safe to eat with no real poisonous look-alikes.  Would you all agree?

The only look alikes would be other Hericium species, which are all edible.

Your good to go  Enjoy.

This is the best species of mushroom I've ever eaten, tastes like sweet calamari, enjoy, I'm jealous.

Geez, now I want to go back to my camp because they are growing EVERYWHERE up there.  I was hunting for oyster shrooms (and found about 3 pounds of them) and finally decided to grab one of these Hericium and ask you guys here.  That section of the Adirondacks is LOADED with mushrooms of all shapes and sizes right now.  I stopped multiple times on my drive up there because I kept seeing them growing on trees on the side of the road.

If you love shrooms and you are anywhere near Forestport/Ohio NY, now is the time.

I have, only on fallen hardwood trees near rivers, only in autumn, which reminds me I should probably go check my spots.
