Hi, So I tried to do my second Brf cake grow ever and I felt like it was going really well. all my 8 cakes had no contams what so ever, I took them outside of the jars and into a 10 L bucket last night (doing the dunk and roll) they have been there for atleast 20 hours atm.
but now the bad part. I went to buy groceries and somehow lost my apartment keys ( never happend before) as I'm writing this post my beautiful cakes are drowning. I tried calling my landlord but she can't let me in before monday morning which means my cakes will be dunked for 65 hours and 100% dead (probably)
sorry for the stupid post, it was just a shitty way to end my project and I just wanted to share.

Sorry for the bad news. There's no way you can break into your apartment?

Break into your place. I'm sure there's a window or some way to get in other than the front door. Also, retrace your steps & go back to the grocery store. Most people turn in lost keys...well, I hope most would.

I'll have to try and get in tomorrow sometime, what is the maximum amount of time cakes can survive?

I've heard of cakes being ok after dunking for 36 hours. Maybe you'll be the one the show us how much longer they can really go.
Or call a locksmith? They probably have a pretty cheap way to open a door since it's probably their most common call.
OR research lock-bumping.
Worst case scenario, kick your door down by kicking with a 'stomping' motion where the deadbolt is. It may take up to 10 kicks if you're a pussy.

I think they would be fine. Just call a locksmith to open it for you.

If you didnt lock the dead bolt then you could probably card the door.

Who doesn't like the deadbolt? Especially when growing mushrooms. If you don't, start doing it. Don't be another

Make a tension wrench and a pick out of a piece of spring steel. You can find perfect pick blanks on the road from the sweepers that come through. If its a kwikset lock you can watch youtube videos and probably do it within the hour (it really is an easy skill) if it's a schlage lock it might take you all day if it has spool pins. Lock bumping almost never works and IMO is harder than just picking the lock. Besides getting a key cut to all 9 or 10 depth depending on brand looks suspicious anyway, and only an ace or true value would have the key machine calibration keys to make a bump key anyway. The number one thing people do is put way to much tension on the tension wrench. Raking works awesome if your pick is small enough especially on a kwikset lock and often times only takes 1-2 attempts.
Also the moral of the story is kwikset locks suck excpt some of the newer ones. Even schlage has went downhill. If you want to protect your stuff get locks made by BEST or the schlage everest keys.
A locksmith will cost more than overnight shipping on a pickset (I use the keychain one it was like 25$ and always works great) Most likely they wont pick your lock just so they can drill it and charge you for a new one since they make money that way and are usually poor on English skills.

My local feed store, home depot, menards, and hydroponic shops all sell it. Any other options in your area?

Have them order it for you? Otherwise I bet there's 6 stores within 20 minutes of mostly anywhere in the US that sell perlite.
