if you grow some vines along trellises then the natural water content should cool things, add some color and decoration, and maybe even grow grapes or something to snack on... that's what I'd do

-grapes take many years to grow...
Mabye a big wrought iron Texas star up in the eve would look cool I think. if you plan in spending time out on your patio I suggest (as a fellow texan) to get a mister set up. you can buy porch and patio mister kits for pretty cheap and they will keep it about 10-15 degrees cooler under your patio. also super easy to install. just hang up the hose with the misters and attach to a garden hose..
definatly some plants/flowers though!! that will really brighten the place up! how about an upside down tomato plant hanging some where? I would also put sunblocking window screens on the windows to cool your home and keep glare down while chillin on the porch.
do you have lighting out there? hang up some lights if not but careful not to make it look too tacky :
also something like this would be great in the winter!!

those mister setups really do cool things off, great idea man... grapes do take a long time to grow but if you don't plan on moving in the next ten years then it'd be worth it IMO.... honestly even morning glories wold work nicely, just wouldn't feed you

ooohh yeah morning glorys are wonderful vines!! you know the seeds from certain ones can make you trip!? I believe LSA(lysergic acid-amide) is the chemical in them...
I've got violet and white morning glorys

also a sound system would make all the world for me anywayz! I looove music and a good speaker setup out there would be awesome! that, the misters and some would make for a nice cozy patio I think

hell yeah dude, those are beauts... the heavenly blue ones definitely contain LSA.... and music would be perfect if you happened to have a bunch of LSA hangin around

You will need some over head fans and some music.

We have some "outdoor" roll down bamboo shades on the short sides of our patio. Helps block the neighbors view more, and provides some shade sometimes. We have them on hooks so we can just take them down if super bad weather is coming or something but we never take them down.

Move to Pittsburgh. But seriously frame it out and install 2 ceiling fans and screen it off. Once you frame it add roll up canvas blinds for privacy with out hurting the air flow. too much

I'll have to agree with ceiling fans. And if you don't mind me saying, changing the patio furniture would help a lot. In the pic you uploaded, I see two dining tables, one out in the open and another under your patio cover. Change the set under the patio cover. Wooden or the classic wicker chairs with cushions would give it a more comfy and relaxed feel.

I quote @the mad machinest.
You need plants, you could put some on top of cover.
2 tables, maybe are too much. Acording to me one small extended table could be good. During summer let it out under a big umbrella or something like that. Add a bench instead of some chair and an armchair/beach chair. Cover it with glass will be great (but it cost too much)or you can add awning for exterior and pave (with wood) will give the patio covers more style

Wow thats a lot of bare concrete! Definitely pot some plants. As stated before hang one or two topsy turvy tomato things, did I mention potted plants ?!? Add some san Pedro cactus as well . Maybe paint that concrete a deep reddish brown. Give it some sort of life. Along with the potted plants you can make a raised veggie garden or ethneo botanical garden. Put some Calea z, Heimia Salicifolia, Argemore Mexicana, Solenostmon Scotelberioides, P. Somniferum, and chamomile

All I've ever heard of was portobello and shitake. SWIM and AFOAF are mythical people I once read about in a book and have grown to idolize them.

You can add multiple attractive things, like Antique chairs, table. Multiple color curtains, multiple color night lights. And i am sure these things will make your place wow.
I had all these things to my patio covers last year, and i must say my patio covers looks very much good then before. And my patio covers has done by All About Shade, Click here to check their work and to get ideas to make your patio cover more cosy.
I know its been time since you made the post, thought to help you.
