Will anything grow on cardboard?
    #18778363 - 08/30/13 05:12 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hello guys

I have access to a fair amount of cardboard at work and its all just going to waste so I would like to put it to use.

There are many posts about using cardboard as spawn but I was wondering if anybody has had any success using it as a substrate?

I cant find any teks on the subject so any lights would be very appreciated

Thanks for the link Psyentist.

I just have to figure out a practical way to reduce the cardboard to shreds so I can pasteurize it and use it in place of the cigarette butts.

While cubes will grow on almost anything I learnt they aren't wood decomposers so I don't think I'd be getting the full potential from wood pulp with cubes.

I think I'd rather go with edibles. Not shiitake though.
I'd prefer something with faster colonisation times.

Any suggestions from the more experienced please?

You can try a paper shredder. after they're cut into long strips you could manually cut them into smaller pieces with some scissors.
Worth a shot I suppose, Good Luck!

Like you already stated, cubes don't like wood much. Try oysters. Lion's mane maybe..?

As for making it smaller, coffee grinder, scissors, paper shredder.

You could always do a wood loving active  :-)
Azures, ovoids, allenii I believe.

Good luck.

And the "Bible grow", had the center of the book cut out for the spawn the rest in.

Oysters will be the best for cardboard.

Try a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in the lid & a weed whacker to chop up the cardboard.
Or start tearing up that shit. Try and trick your kids or old lady into doing it for you.

Cardboard might work.  I think it's great that your trying to find a verm replacement.

Your reasons for trying to find one are wrong though.  Verm IS safe, it IS cheap, and it IS easy to find.  You'll have a hard time finding something safer, cheaper, or easier to find.

Still it would be nice to have some verm alternatives.  Maybe you'll even find something better than verm.  Cardboard might be a good one.  If you had a crosscut shredder you could easily chop it up into verm sized pieces.  The myc could also digest the cardboard for additional fuel, so it might have some benefits.

Verm can be dusty sometimes, and breathing any type of dust is not healthy and will shorten your lifespan.  Wood dust is actually fairly carcinogenic, and it's probably a lot more dangerous than verm dust.  So I would be careful trying to find a replacement, it might actually end up being a lot more dangerous.
