First time grow, and I would love to have your feedback!
    #18780083 - 08/31/13 01:52 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello All!

First and foremost, I would like to say that this Forum has been a wonderful resource.  Mostly, I rather stay quiet and read everybodies rambles, because of that, I have been able to gain a deep knowledge and firm understanding of Mycology.

I would like to thank all of the members for their help.  Particularly those with such valuable knowledge, those who devote so much time ensuring that us "Noobs" are able to learn and grow from their wisdom.

That being said, I would like to provide you with my research thus far, and see if anyone can provide some helpful feedback.  Please understand that not only is this my first post here on Shroomery, this is as well my first attempt ever for growing in the sake of research.

If I have erred by posting this in the wrong place, or whatever, please moderators, have a heart and send it off to where it should be!

Now, Business.

To begin with, I was able to find a great PC at a yard sale, a 23 qt presto, for 30 bucks..  I acquired some birdseed, and some spores from a great vendor.  I ordered Brazilians and then I was able to get Tasmanians for free.. (Free is ALWAYS nice!)

Following the advice found here, I sterilized everything and got going.  I was able to successfully knock up 6 qt jars.

Once the jars were around 80% colonized I then mixed them (keeping the two strains separate) with more birdseed that I had also ran through the PC.

Here is where I have my first question, and I apologize, I do not have a supporting picture for visual stimulation.

I mixed them into a filter patched bag that I acquired from a vendor and had sterilized.  Both strains were doing very well, they were colonizing very quickly.  One morning, however, when I went to check on the progress, I noticed that inside the bag containing the Brazilians there were little flies, like Fruit Flies. Upon further investigation there were even larva digging around in the mycelium.  I haven't read anywhere about this even being an issue, and the other bag, containing the Tasmanians, was perfectly fine.  Assuming the invaded bag was a loss, I disposed of it accordingly.

Has anyone else ever had this issue?  Any tips, other than the obvious, does anyone have about this?

(I procured a few fly traps (those that hang from the ceiling), and then made a ""Gnat Trap"" out of a plastic soda bottle and some tasty ingredients-  These traps collected a few little buggers, haven't even seen one since.)

After the setback, I focused on the Tasmanians.  They continued to colonize and soon it was ready to get them in their new home to prepare for casing.

I had some trouble with keeping the humidity up and keeping the temps where they should be.  I have since been able to alleviate the temperature issues, however, I can't seem to get the humidity to stabilize above 50-60.  I'm currently using a basic Tub in a Tub- which is was the response of the temperature issues. Any advice?

Even with the setbacks with the little buggers and the temp/humidity issues, the Tasmanians have been real champs.  Soo.. once the colonized birdseed was ready, I mixed it with the pasteurized manure and cased with a pasteurized casing mix that I procured from the same vendor as the Hpoo..

I noticed that the Mycelium started to peek out in patches.  I allowed one more day, and more mycelium showed up, still in more patches.. So I acquired some sterile coco coir, and spread that out.  Here is a picture from before I added the extra Coir.

(I apologize for the picture quality, this was taken in minimal light)

After I added the extra coir, I allowed a few more days to colonize, and then began the pinning and fruiting processes.  Reflecting on my progress, I am pretty sure that I accidentally allowed an Overlay situation, I believe is what it is called.  With that being said, this brings me to my next question...

I don't really have a picture that shows it, however, the mycelium developed some spots of color..  light yellow, some light blue (like the color of a bruised mushie)..  What is this from? The growth has been remarkable, at least to me since this is my first attempt, so I am not sure if it's a result from a  contaminate or maybe water from the humidity dropping and settling on the mycelium.  Any Advice?

Ok, so, even though we had a bit of a colorful mycelium issue, we have now successfully started fruiting.  I was sooo amazed at the vigor these guys have.  Within the 12 hour cycles, there is so much progress.

Here is a picture from the first day I noticed the baby fruits.  Pinning had already occurred the day before, and at this time, no veils had tore.

Here is another, more personal view:

Within another 12 hours, this is what I had:

I was able to peek at them this afternoon.  I actually was out when the lights went off, so I couldn't take a decent enough picture to even bother.  However, as I peeked in, I noticed that more veils have torn, they have all grown in length, and more fruits have developed on top.  The caps, whose veils had already torn, have opened more and flattened out.  Those caps have also developed the iconic tasmanian markings.

I will take more pictures when they wake up in a few hours, and will be happy to add them in!

So..  For my first time, I'd love any input you all have!

As for the future, I have procured several items- an under-bed tote, silica kitty litter, and some mesh grill covers.  I figure I will do the obvious, and spread the kitty litter on the bottom of the tote, and then use the grill covers as a separation barrier to lay the fruits on.  Does that sound like a good plan?  Any advice?  Does the tote necessarily need to be airtight?  That can also be arranged if necessary.

I am using the Kitty Litter mainly because it is the most easily acquired for me, and I don't have access to a dehydrator with temperature controls.

Thanks for all your help, any advice is absolutely appreciated.

ps...  On a slightly unrelated issue-

Someone gave me a spore print that they had from the past.  The guy that gave it to me said he had forgotten the strain, however he knew it was a Psilocybe cubensis of some kind.  He also noted that it was about 10 years old (LOL).  Is there, even the slightest possibility, that this print may still be active?  Could it be used to spawn from?  It was well kept the entire 10 years in a folded piece of paper, in an envelope, inside an airtight bag, in a airtight storage bin.  I peeked in at the print and it is very dark, looks like new really.  Any thoughts?

----New Pics----

So, yesterday morning at lights on, this is what we found:

And then, 12 hours later, at lights off, this is what we had:

----More New Pics----

So, here it is, bright and early-  Wake up time for the shroomies- This is their progress from overnight..

Question:
What is the deal with the blackened colors of those kinda in the one area?

--I figure it was just spores at first.. and it does wipe off with a gentle brush, however, I'm unsure..
--nvm figured it out

More to come!

Awesome! You had success quit worrying over the details and enjoy the success of your first grow! Good job!

BTW the print in probably still good and a cube is a cube. No need to worry what strain it is

Also if you really want answers to your questions you are going to have to consolidate them into an organized fashion
You have questions spread all over the place throughout the text. Try numbering them in a column and you'll receive the answers you seek

Those little buggers are nasty fellows..  Very invasive.  I done some research, and it seems that they are highly attracted to the growing medium of houseplants.  And there is the possibility that there may be quite a few houseplants around..

Check this out for some good info

And thanks for the info, and the compliments!
