Fruiting before full colonization
    #18776758 - 08/30/13 10:28 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys...

I tried asking this question in a post last week but a couple other posters got into an argument and my question kind of got ignored, so I was hoping some other people might see this and be able to help.

First time grower, PFTek.  I'm about 5 weeks into my first attempt and a couple days ago, I noticed pinning in one of my jars before full colonization.  I've been told to keep an eye on the jar and hope it colonizes.  It is indeed still colonizing, but not as fast as the cake is fruiting in the jar.  Not sure how long I should wait or what I should do.

Here's a pic of the uncolonized part of the jar: http://imgur.com/qqx1PCh

And here's a pic of the fruit: http://imgur.com/7yiduLp
(btw, the pic makes it look like it's all black on the bottom below the mushrooms...it's really not.  must be something to do with my camera and the reflections of the moisture or something.)

Another thing that I should mention:  This was 1 of 5 jars I did initially and it was by far the fastest colonizer, even though it was uneven.  The portion of the jar that's fruiting was the part of the jar that seemed to colonize very rapidly (compared to my other jars, in my limited experience.)

Anyway, just looking for some advice.  I've searched on the board and I see people saying to ditch the cake because early pinning is due to comtamination.  I also see people waiting and waiting until full colonization, but I've already waited 3-4 days.  Other people have said to dump it in the backyard and just see what happens and eat any healthy looking fruit that pops up.

Appreciate the help!

You can upload right to the shroomery which I believe also strips all the meta-data from your pictures too if it's a concern.

I would be surprised if that doesn't colonize in the next few days though.

Thanks man...

If it does colonize in a couple days, should I wait an additional week for it to consolidate?

In a couple days when I birth this jar, can I just eat those pins?  Kind of eager to sample what I've been growing!

Why not let them grow? A waste to pick and eat a pin :imo:

I agree with this.

but you could...I think it would be a greater sense of accomplishment if you let them mature...idk I'm only 3 days into my first go, but I'll know soon! : )

I've seen pictures of similar stuff in the archives...i'll see if i can't find anything on it but i think what needs to be said has been.

The only reason I ask is, I assumed I'd have to pick them off before dunking and rolling anyway.  If they can remain through that process, then I'd definitely wait, like you suggest.

You can be careful and not break them off during dunking and rolling. You don't have to viciously roll your cakes in verm. You can easily work around pins by simply patting on the verm with your fingers and not actually rolling the cake.

Pins will do just fine through a dunk and roll if you're gentle.

well this dude tried to get azurs and they were cubes and fruited in the jar and this is what he did:

so I went ahead and rinsed the cake being careful not to damage the pins, rolled it lightly in verm, and put it in SGFC.  If it does turn out to be cubensis I'll do a proper dunk and roll after this first flush.

and I was gonna say I don't see why you couldn't do what peter said...so go for it. and keep us updated on what happens .

I wanna know!

It looks like there's some bacteria so it may not finish at all. If you have the option of burying it that's what I'd do and you might find some mushrooms growing there later.

Take a wiff through your noc holes and report what you smell. Smells anything other than fresh mushie smell then bury it.

Where are you guys seeing the bacteria?  If you mean the bottom of the jar, that's just something funky with the picture/camera.

Smells faintly of fresh mushrooms - not as much as it did when the jar first started colonizing.  Still, no foul smells coming from it at all.

The brown slime, you can see most easily in top right edge of uncolonized area but it's in the rest of the area as well. Also that sort of crevice running through the top part of the uncolonized section is an indirect result of the bacteria.

Although just the facts that mycelium is colonizing in such a non-radial pattern and that the jar is pinning before full colonization could be considered signs of bacteria as well.
