I really like Paco and I LOVE Bill Frisell. I've seen him 3 times - each show has been absolutely mind-blowing.

Bill Frisell is on some higher plane, like a Fripp or Jimi, only on jazz guitar.
immense live and studio efforts, immense discography too.

ORLY?
I'll leave zappa out of this. I liked Hendrix and SRV well enough (SRV wasn't even the best guitar player in hos family) but there are way better guys out there.

LOL, i would be.
Al Di Meola is one of my favorite guitarists. The Wizard is one of the best guitar songs, ever, in my opinion.

I still have the Elegant Gypsy vinyl I bought when it first came out. It's a bit scratchy but they're my scratches

I respect Hendrix, but I do agree that he was good at best. I think that he simply filled a void, and his passing made him immortal within the space he existed. Just like Joplin or even (dare he say it) Cobain, They were at the right place in time, and died when they were hot. I think that this set him in stone.
I think that had he survived, he could have continued to make "OK" music. I think that his popularity would have waned to be more comparable to someone like Eddie Money. Everyone knows Eddie Money, and not too many hate on him....not too many go out and get his new CD either....And YES I think that Cobain and Joplin would have suffered the same fate....
No its not simply about death. Compare ODB/Big Baby Jesus....Wu-tang clan member etc. No one remembers him except me and a few friends I think. (I want to give a shout-out to all the Eskimos, all the submarines....And myself).
Then we can glance at the pile of shit that is contemporary music, and wonder. If Brittany Spears died a few years ago, would she have been put into the same bracket? One can only hope not.
TL:Dr
Hendrix was good. Not the best by a long shot. His death made him more fame than he would ever carry now had he lived.

You don't know much about Hendrix. He seriously threatened his fellow musicians when he came on the club scene. Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton, among others felt threatened by his talent.
He was the highest paid live act ever when he played at the newport pop festival in 1969.
He headlined Woodstock.
He is on many top 10 and top 100 lists.
His music is covered by hundreds of bands, such as Aerosmith, zz top, Eric clapton, grateful dead, etc.
Many guitarists list Hendrix as an influence in their playing.
Dozens of tribute albums.
There was no luck about it. It was talent, genius and hard work.
