Yosimite or Mamoth

Two friends and I are going to chose to go to either mammoth or Yosimite for a little wild mushroom hunting expidition. Though we do not expect to find anything it is always helpful to know what to look for. We are obviously looking at dead wood area's near creeks and such. Also we aren't opposed to taking our trip to Grazing fields, we just don't know where to find any. Given the recent rains in the area we expect to see growth of all kinds. What species should we keep an eye out for? P. Cinc. P. Cyan? Azures? Fly Agarics? Im not sure.

Summer rains are rare in Yosemite, and the reports have not been sounding good recently. You might find some chanterelles and porcini under fir when it rains though. It would be worthwhile to wait for a good rain and then go a few days later. There are no psilocybin mushrooms in the areas you are considering, they are a fall coastal thing for the most part.

Outstanding, thank you for saving me the trip. Fall Coastal thing? Im assuming the wooded regions closer to the beach such as long beach and San Bernadino?

No, not in the woods. In California, psilocybin mushrooms mostly grow in wood chip landscaping. Also occasionally there is Panaeolus cinctulus in lawns and horse manure. Check the mushroomobserver.org distribution maps for Psilocybe cyanescens, P. allenii and P. ovoideocystidiata. Pay attention to the locations and dates that they were found.

Search mushroomobserver.org for the places you are going to get an idea of what fungi you can expect to find, and at what time of year it appears. California is extremely well represented on that site.

I'm guessing the weather in California should be somewhat similar to where I'm from. No mushrooms until mid/late October if I'm lucky to get some rain by that time, I miss hunting some mushrooms

California has two main mushroom habitats - the mountains and the coastal areas. They are very different. I would head to the mountains if there is a good amount of rain in August or September. If there is no rain, try fog drip areas along the coast, the first ridge after the ocean fruits mushrooms all year long.

I live in Algarve in a pretty coastal zone but we don't have absolutely any humidity from about May to August/September, the woods were I usually go are actually pretty close to the sea but have no altitude, I have found an occasional P. tinctorius and that's it. We also have zones with more altitude but I haven't been there yet this Summer, I'll probably try camping there in September. In here I'm only able to find mushrooms on a regular basis from about November to late March or April, if the spring is rainy.

In May and June and early July, the place to be is the mountains, near Yosemite or El Dorado National Forest or Mt. Shasta. August is usually the most difficult month for mushrooms in CA, the state is usually pretty dry. In August you can pick mushrooms at cemetaries, as they tend to water a lot. Just look for the greenest cemetary nearby in google maps and you will find some good stuff. The first Psilocybe finds usually come in around the last week of September and peak around Dec. 10.

I'm yet to find a Psilocybe here in Portugal, but then again I'd most easily detect other genra with which I'm more familiar and grow abundantly around here, Amanita, Lactarius, Russula, etc this spring for my great surprise Chantarellus, maybe I haven't been paying enough attention to some LBMs, but I know they may even be around and not fruit every season. The genus I'm really curious about and yet to find, Psilocybe, Morchella and Phallus.

The South Lake Tahoe area has been producing a decent amount of mushrooms even though the area is covered in thick smoke, at least the last couple weeks have a been fairly good. There were some thunderstorms along with cool temperatures that seemed to get the fall mushroom season started at least around here, but it didn't rain everywhere so hunting can be hit and miss. here are some finds from last week

Earlier this week I was up in tahoe and after being outside for an couple hours my throat became irritated and my eyes were burning.
