forrest's flowhood & cleanroom build

a while back i started the build of my flowhood, a hepa filter of 60 x 50 cm , with a centrifugal fan. and I'am using a tomato-greenhouse as cleanroom. today i did the lighter-test, but there was quite a noticable difference in airflow in the middle of the filter or the sides. because the fan is in the middle of the back, it pushes the air to the sides, thus creating less pressure in the middle, but i thought my plenum was big enough, and on the pictures i saw of the flowhoods the company where i bought the filter and fan makes, they place the fan in the same way.
do you guy's think i'll have a serious higher contamination rate because of this? (i understand the word ''laminar'' in ''laminar flow hood'' ofcourse is important...)
a table i had, wich had the perfect surface size, but too short legs, i added some table legs to. and because it blowed way to fast, i taped up a big portion of the prefilter, after adding 2 more layers of prefilter.

i'm still going to make clear plastic screens on the sides and top of the workspace, and a screen i can fit at the and of those, to be able to close it, for when not in use.
i'll update it as pieces will be added to the flowhood.

Neat build. I'd put a small baffle between the fan and the filter to disrupt the airflow. Turbulence is good going into the filter

thank's guys!
i'll learn over time how well it will function as it is, hoping i won't have to break it down and build it again... yeah the baffle might be a good idea

doesn't look like your plenum is deep enough. I've heard that you want it close to as deep as your filter is tall. Though I've seen hoods that did not follow this design.
just my $0.02.

I was thinking the same with mine. My plenum is only 12 inches as I always read 2x the depth of your filter. also my blower on low speed blew plenty hard before adding a prefilter. But after adding a merv 12 prefilter it doesnt blow hard enough on high speed :/ But I'm sort of thinking i'm getting more back pressure by having less plenum and it not having anywhere to go. My lighter right up to the filter nearly blows it out though and at times does and is very close to a full 90 degree angle but when taken back 6 inches it becomes more of a 60 or so degree angle. What merv is your prefilter do you know?

it's a G4 filter. (i think merv 9)
but now i understand why it blowed so much faster than it should. along the sides it allso almost blows out the lighter, but in the middle the flame sometimes almost stands upright. so if i'll make the flow speed be distributed equally over the surface of the filter, it will be more moderate everywhere, so maybe won't need to tape up so much of the prefilter.
i also decided on this plenum depth, because i often read '' make plenum twice the DEPTH of hepa-filter'' . drake, do you know where you read ''tall''?
anyway, i thought of a way i can probably make it longer without having to take all the sides off. it can give quite some stress to build a flowhood ^_^.
thanks for your responses anyhow!

nope, that's total hearsay, haha. I just figured that I couldn't go wrong with 24" cause I remember people really stressing/bitching about it while I was reading up on it. maybe someone has already said this, I think you may have, but every hood i've seen has the air blowing in from the top. even with inline fans. I reckon that's where you strayed from the 'traditional' design. It's convenient for you though, with the prefilter location and all.

I don't know anything about flow hoods, but I like the simplicity of it and the straight through design, let us know how well it works!
...and what the hell is a plenum? Sounds like I need to do a lot of research before I think about building one of these...

The space that holds the air, if it is too tight it will leak out and causes contaminations in stead of preventing it.

a plenum can be thought as a container of air that allows positive pressure to be built in an air system.

So essentially it's the dimensions/volume of your entire flow hood, pretty much?

well, you have two hollow spaces in the flowhood, the place between the prefilter and fan, and between the fan and hepa-filter. the last one is the plenum. it needs to have plenty of space so that the back of the hepa-filter gets pressurized evenly.

I'm enjoying the flowhood greatly now it's up and running for a while i made it longer with edges after the blower to break the airstream and make it more evenly distributed. with 4 prefilters, i think it is still blowing a bit too hard, i haven't worked with spores in front of it yet, so it wasn't a problem. been nice and contam-free!
and the problem of condensation inside the incubator is fixed by a new rubber seal/edge, and a heatingcable running right next to it.

Nice, I remember responding to this thread a while back but didn't remember it was you!
Cool build and I can attest to it's contam-free-ness
I may have to consult you when I build mine, but it could be a while before I have the space...
I've been using just a styrofoam cooler for an incubator, no heat source, and I've been amazed how warm it gets. Fill that thing with like 6 - 8 jars of CS4 and leave the lid loose, and it literally feels warm to the touch every time I open it to check on them! Not just the jars, but the air in there even feels warm. Of course my house is pretty cold... amazing what mycelium can do though.

thanks sudo and forrester ^_^
i think the classic flowhoodmodel takes less space, so i don;t know about asking me for advice, but it works just as well.
wow that is pretty amazing, about the heat the myc gives.
