Now that sucks.... I wouldnt have left, I would have taken his keys and let him wait in the parking lot. If I paid for the show, Im staying for the show. Especially the Allman Brothers.

Hendrix just popularised the wah pedal and phasing effects, outside of that he was entirely mediocre as a songwriter and guitar player.

that makes no sense. try to defend your idol, with more of a "sense making" kinda statement.
how can it not be possible to influence people with music, (that by has been being released post-humonously for decades now) when you have music that still released, even when you're dead, and when his music is still stipulated as being the "best of the best of what the era or FOREVER had to offer blah blah blah you hear it so much"; how is it not possible to have influenced people with that 40 years after his death? how?

IMO Jimi and SRV are by far the best guitarists ever to live. They could make any sound they dreamt up on the guitar, it was magical. They both died way too young .

My favorite Jimi. He may have been just another guitarist, but the songs that I consider my favorites often include his work, and mylife would be very different if he had never made them.

old and new and an "origin" are concepts that confuse the ever living fuck out of people, i'd assume is the reason.
PS: just look at King's stance in comparison's to SRV's stance on guitar. you can tell the world of difference right there.

Dude relax. I wasn't even referring to you. Sounds like some one has a guilty conscience. Besides, that was my first post in this thread. You sure do get worked up rather easily... . . .
i wasn't worked up at all. i was just making a point. sorry i used your vanilla emotican post to use it but i tohught you were implying that me and or sVs and or somebody was "trolling" but there was none. just genuine discussion here man.
no offence, but YOU seem to be getting worked up over nothing.

what about Tuck Andress?
Meh. He's clearly a great player, but nowhere near the level of soul and power in his playing.

how in the hell do you determine "soul and power levels" from not knowing an artist at all?
seems like ass talk.
"clearly a great player" means, he's a great player. there is nothing more to it then that. Jimi was a great player. he wasn't some special guitar God. sorry, it's just plain truth. i can keep posting more guitarists and pretty well every single guitarist from BB King to Nels Cline will be said to have "less then what Jimi had" because lets face it... people love Jimi's cock, and other players cock. can't be objective.
but that's what makes this fun, anyways... well, funny is fun...

jesus dude, you really are the most negative person in the world. he did a hell of alot more than "popularize the wah pedal". he created a whole new style of playing. he was an innovator. thats what people dont understand. I always hear people say "why the fuck does everyone think jimi hendrix was the best guitar player ever?". people dont get it. when people say he was the best they don't mean he was the best technical player, they mean he was the most innovative, soulful, and creative. and he did alot of acid

that makes no sense. try to defend your idol, with more of a "sense making" kinda statement.
how can it not be possible to influence people with music, (that by has been being released post-humonously for decades now) when you have music that still released, even when you're dead, and when his music is still stipulated as being the "best of the best of what the era or FOREVER had to offer blah blah blah you hear it so much"; how is it not possible to have influenced people with that 40 years after his death? how?
he was talking about slobbering on sVs's knob...

I completely disagree. There's a hell of a lot more to making someone great in my eyes than just their technical proficiency. How do you measure "soul and power"? Everyone has a different metric, but 95% of people agree that Jimi and SRV had "it". There's a reason they made it. Of course some of it was dumb luck, as is every great success in this world, but a lot of it is on the back of hard work and an undefinable characteristic I'm referring to as "soul" and "charisma".

no, he wasn't all that. he was some of that.
that's why sVs isn't being negative and you're projecting. he's just being honest, actually; and trust me, i'm not just arbitrarily defending him neither... you're literally just missing his point, and are confused and/or projecting your insecurities onto him.
Cream came before Hendrix so all that innovator stuff just is ... plain wrong. there was more then just that too, look at Blue Cheer for example. heavy, psychedelic rock like Hendrix.
the only thing that Jimi Hendrix "did first before anybody" was popularize studio production effects as some sort of gimmick. i mean, great idea, but that hardly is any sort "major leap" for anybody. i'm sure producers had probably been trying to get people to use their new effects from the get go, and probably alot of "purists" wanted to say no, and some innovators SUCH AS Jimi, or The Beatles, decided "hey, i'm not gonna be a pussy, lets try the new effect and shit".
but really, that was more of a collaborative effort. i mean, did Jimi Hendrix MAKE his own effects?
i don't think so.

alot of guitarists ahve that soul and you don't see it. my point being that, your equation of what makes "it soulful" isn't the fucking formula everyone uses.
again, you're being blind to the fact that ASIDE FROM SRV and Jimi, there are MANY (make a note of that, many many many) guitarist that have the same "soul", and you're not seeing it, because you don't want to. you're not invested enough to actually listen for more then you think an artist is worth, to your immediate sensibilities, which is why... you'll always say that some few guitarists "beat out in soul" the literally thousands of other immensely soulful guitarists. whatever, i'm not trying to convince you. just, statistically... you're just wrong.

and didn't "innovate" until he got into a studio. so? that was my point. PS: Eric Clapton started his career in Cream, after his stint in the Yardbirds, which was 1963, and he had an actual album on his belt, BEFORE Hendrix, so your point is moot.

Unfortunately you can't be "wrong" about opinions, which leads me to the conclusion that no, I am not wrong. I have given many guitarists a lot of ear time, and I like a lot of them. I have yet to find one that I prefer to SRV, Jimi as a close second.
One factor I have not explicitly mentioned is that I love blues-rock - it resonates with me in a way no other music ever has. Obviously, this makes me gravitate to blues-rock guitarists. I love Chris Duarte and Kenny Wayne Shepherd too, but they do not live up to SRV in my opinion.
It's great that your opinion differs from mine, and I'm more than willing to keep listening to great guitarists in hopes of finding one who is better, but I simply have not yet.

awesome, so Jimi isn't "the best and most innovative guitarist".
i agree completely. there are lots.
PS: you can't be wrong about your opinion, that's why your opinion is important here about making a point... so what in the flying hell is your point? that Jimi and SRV are your favorite guitarists? cool, i have a favorite guitarist too... tops for me, has gotta be Fred Firth.
gotta be.
PS: damn, almost forgot about Otomo Yoshihide too. great guitarist, producer and composer overall.

I'm not even going to get that far, if you pick up a guitar one day and get a tab book for jimi's albums (which are widely available) you will learn all sorts of shit and no one will hold a gun to your head to listen to jimi hendrix.

hey, it's not really important. i'm just following up with the new posts that people are making.
in fact, right now i am loving music, like i have been the past hour.
look at these soulless bastards here.
Bill Frisell, has immense soul that has been traded away from his afterlife.
String Trio of New York, too, they have an amazing soulless guitar wizard here.

immense live and studio efforts, immense discography too.

I respect Hendrix, but I do agree that he was good at best. I think that he simply filled a void, and his passing made him immortal within the space he existed. Just like Joplin or even (dare he say it) Cobain, They were at the right place in time, and died when they were hot. I think that this set him in stone.
I think that had he survived, he could have continued to make "OK" music. I think that his popularity would have waned to be more comparable to someone like Eddie Money. Everyone knows Eddie Money, and not too many hate on him....not too many go out and get his new CD either....And YES I think that Cobain and Joplin would have suffered the same fate....
No its not simply about death. Compare ODB/Big Baby Jesus....Wu-tang clan member etc. No one remembers him except me and a few friends I think. (I want to give a shout-out to all the Eskimos, all the submarines....And myself).
Then we can glance at the pile of shit that is contemporary music, and wonder. If Brittany Spears died a few years ago, would she have been put into the same bracket? One can only hope not.
TL:Dr
Hendrix was good. Not the best by a long shot. His death made him more fame than he would ever carry now had he lived.

You don't know much about Hendrix. He seriously threatened his fellow musicians when he came on the club scene. Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton, among others felt threatened by his talent.
He was the highest paid live act ever when he played at the newport pop festival in 1969.
He headlined Woodstock.
He is on many top 10 and top 100 lists.
His music is covered by hundreds of bands, such as Aerosmith, zz top, Eric clapton, grateful dead, etc.
Many guitarists list Hendrix as an influence in their playing.
Dozens of tribute albums.
There was no luck about it. It was talent, genius and hard work.

you might wanna check the opening post... it's a thread about music. OP enjoys jams that kick his ass, as do i. let not make this thread about Jimi Hendrix, or like then just Rule 4 this thread.
because we don't need another random shout out to Jimi Hendrix here; there is enough of that implied in people's signatures.

Lots of people list the Velvet Underground as influences but Sterling Morrison was no virtuoso
Popularity in the music press means dick
Lots of people headlined Woodstock and if it were to be held today Miley Cyrus would.
He was a drunk and a junkie. That is incompatible with the notion of hard working.

Why is not playing the same song the same way twice a bad thing? There is an cd out called variations on a theme which has Hendrix playing red house in 8 different ways. I think some people find it interesting.

so done with this thread. Hendrix really felt the music, something a lot of musicians lack.
but you just can't compare musicians like that, there is no hierarchy. and for the record, anyone who can be lead guitarist, and lead vocalist at once is talented.
also jimi played left handed, yet never restrung his guitar for it.
everything i know about jimi added up just makes him worthy of a thread.

Pretty much sums up the majority of UtUF posts.
My opinion stands. Hendrix was nothing more than a person at his best when he died unexpectedly from taking (alleged) 18 times recommended dose of sleeping pills.
Mediocre musician who by 27 was an obvious full blown junkie, who died with a pile of vomit in his lungs. I respect the supporting opinions, just respect mine.
I almost hate to say it, but Bruce Springsteen has slightly more talent than Hendrix EVER did. Tom Waits has more talent in his left testicle than Hendrix ever did.
Bottom line IMHO, Hendrix if still alive WOULD NOT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. His death was the greatest thing that could have happened to his career.
Hendrix name can be put with other names like Cobain, Joplin and Hendrix. They died at the peak of their fame. This made them what they are today.
Either way this thread has just been a fuckin circle jerk.
Tl:dr Hendrix's Music = mediocre

Drug use and violence A black and white "mug shot" of an arrested man. Arrest photo in Canada, 1969
Hendrix was widely associated with the use of psychedelic drugs, particularly lysergic acid diethylamide. He first experimented with the drug when he met Linda Keith in late 1966; he had previously smoked cannabis. He also used amphetamines, particularly while touring.[194] Friends and bandmates reported that Hendrix would often become angry and violent when he drank too much alcohol.[195] Though illicit drugs alone did not seem to produce a significant negative effect on him, when he mixed them with alcohol, he would often become incendiary.[196] Hendrix's friend, Herbie Worthington, explains: "You wouldn't expect somebody with that kind of love to be that violent ... He just couldn't drink ... he simply turned into a bastard."[197] A girlfriend of Hendrix's, Carmen Borrero, required stitches after he hit her above her eye with a vodka bottle during a drunken, jealous rage.[197]
In January 1968, the Experience travelled to Sweden for a one-week tour of Europe. During the early morning hours of the first day, Hendrix became engaged in a drunken brawl in the Hotel Opalen in Stockholm, smashing a plate-glass window and injuring his right hand, for which he received medical treatment.[197] The incident culminated in his arrest, though the authorities released him pending a court appearance on the 16th.[198] The remainder of the tour was uneventful, though Hendrix had to spend some time in Sweden awaiting his trial, which resulted in a large fine.[199] After the burglary of his house in Benedict Canyon, California, while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, he punched his friend Paul Caruso and accused him of the theft. Hendrix then chased Caruso away from the residence while throwing stones at him.[200]
On May 3, 1969, while checking through Canadian customs at Toronto Pearson International Airport, authorities arrested Hendrix for drug possession after finding a small amount of heroin and hashish in his luggage. After being released on a CAN$10,000 cash bail the same day, only four hours before his show was scheduled to begin, the Experience performed at Maple Leaf Gardens that night. The courts required Hendrix to appear before a judge at a later date. In his trial defense Hendrix claimed that a fan had slipped the drugs into his bag without his knowledge; he was acquitted of the charges.[201]

Well, if Wikipedia says he got drunk twice and was acquitted on heroin possession charges, then he must be a drunken junkie that can't work hard.

just pretty much read quickly through the whole thread. we can (and do) argue about who the "best" guitar player is for years and years and years. when it comes down to it we all know no one is the same and we all have our own unique opinion about music. my friends and I have had this argument a million times. we finally decided that when you get to the level that hendrix was on, along with guys like j. page, clapton, srv, duane allman, ect(countless others those are just some of my personal favs) their is no "best" their is just different, and the "best" is what sounds best to you.
according to my ears i would definitely put hendrix pretty high on my personal "best" guitar player list. he had electrifying playing and unique sound, and influenced an unknown amount of other musicians. oh, and if by sold his soul you mean he worked his ass off and practiced every single day then yeah he sold it right to the devil.

If you ask almost any guitar virtuoso who the greatest guitarist of our time is; they'll most likely say Allan Holdsworth. Almost nobody knows about the guy and it's a shame.

Jimi is the greatest ever, but not necessarily because of his guitar playing skill level. He wrote a ton of classic songs, which most of the other guitar greats mentioned in this thread didn't do. He played a huge role in the hippie/psychedelic movement. He was very innovative. He opened the doors of creativity for all other guitar players with the way he played. At the time, it was like nothing anyone had ever heard. Before Jimi, guitar playing was in black and white. When he was done, it was in technicolor.

Never really been a fan of hendrix. I don't feel the "soul" and whatnot in his playing like I hear about.
I don't think I've heard him stray from a pentatonic or blues scale at all. Ever.
Gets pretty boring to me.

This is quite the crock of shit. He wrote a ton of classic songs? He didn't write Red House, Hey Joe, All Along the Watchtower. Just what did he write that is such a classic? He changed music? I think not. Quote:

This got pretty far off topic. First, how deep can you throat Jimi's dick? For real, I've never seen such impressive celebrity cock-worshiping before. Second, Jimi sucks. It's not a matter of who's the best, just letting you know that it's definitely not Jimi.
Who gives a fuck and a shit if he's left or right handed? That has absolutely zero impact on learning to play an instrument; something we can't ever be sure hendrix even bothered to try.

There a lot of underrated bands from the 60's and 70's A lot of it is hard to find though. If you're lucky though You'll find some good folks who will upload the music online Or you'll meet someone or find the vinyls.
Can't really hold that against someone.

Jimi Changed rock and roll and did things on a guitar that had never been done before but I agree, there's so many amazing guitar players in history its hard to say who is THE best guitar player. Its almost like saying who's the best chef in the world or who's the best painter in the world. You could say Bobby Flay is the best chef and Pablo Picasso is the best painter in the world. However there's going to be people asked the same question that might not like Flays cooking or Picassos paintings. It all comes down to personal taste

Star spangled banner by hendrix alone is enough to make him the greatest in my opinion. I mean how in the hell can you say "huh you know what i'm gonna do? Make a fucking battlefield play out off of my guitar." Seriously listen to it it's hard to make out but i think right after the rockets red glare is when it start to all sound like rockets going off, then women screaming, rifles going off and can't remember the rest of the sound effects but the whole thing sounds like a warzone.

And? He'd be a dick if he agreed publicly. He was humble. But anyway, Hendrix was the greatest of all time in the sense that he made the biggest impact. Trust me, Jimi changed the world of guitar playing overnight. Eric Clapton ("God") said he considered quitting after he heard Jimi play for the first time.

jesus dude, you really are the most negative person in the world. he did a hell of alot more than "popularize the wah pedal". he created a whole new style of playing. he was an innovator. thats what people dont understand. I always hear people say "why the fuck does everyone think jimi hendrix was the best guitar player ever?". people dont get it. when people say he was the best they don't mean he was the best technical player, they mean he was the most innovative, soulful, and creative. and he did alot of acid
Guitarists nowadays (or any musician) have so much more technology to aid them in their music. Hell, most aren't even decent musicians. They let computers make sound effects. They let computers do the drumbeats. All these so-called musicians are just decent with a computer. Jimi, SRV, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, etc. never had the benefits of computer-enhanced music. The late 1960s had some of the most innovative music since the Big Band Swing Era of the 1930s/40s. Youngsters seem to forget that we didn't have all this technology 40-50 yrs ago. Granted, there's been some good music put out since. I thought Punk was good in the late 70s...the 80s sucked with the Glam/Big Hair/Spandex bands...but Grunge saved the day, bringing rock & roll back to its roots, with Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, etc. Anyway, Jimi will always be #1 in my book!!

nah, music's just been truckin' along fine, duder.
nothing wrong with anything and "youngsters" like expanding their minds on new music, they don't often feel like they have to stick to the old for any facetious reasons such as "it was more what i like" and "it had more soul" or "it was more talent; these guys don't even play there own instruments!"
lol, that old adage doesn't apply to anyone outside of really generic and overwhelmingly undesirable music. anywhere where anyone is innovating is perfectly better music then Jimi Hendrix because we're not all living in delusions about what music "should be to everyone".
it's just not reality. it's not how things work.
only for some people, that are either stuck in the past, or for people who are too blind, stuck-up or in many cases, just simply haven't found out about, been turn in the right direction for, or looked into music that is equally satisfying for themselves.
alot of the time though, people are just stuck up because frame of mind for what they enjoy in music is so narrowminded they can't even see how people life what they like, when all they like is a very marginal amount of music.
