Let's also not forget all this new scientific research on the deleterious effects playing football has on the body and brain.  Effects that happen to almost all players, not just the few who make it to the next level.

So how much money do you give them then? I don't know how much college football makes in comparison to the NFL but I know it's an enormous number. So are we going to have in essence two professional leagues? And you know why stop there? Even high school football in certain parts of the country make significant money. So don't those athletes deserve a little bit of cash? After all like you said, that new scientific research on the deleterious effects of playing football and what it does to the body and brain applies to them as well.

Let whoever wants to pay pay however much they want to whomever they want.

Another workable solution would be to keep the bans on institutions paying players, but allow outside organizations/individuals give cash or gifts to players if they so desire.  And at the very least we should allow players to profit off their own image.  If Johnny Manziel wants to sell "Johnny Football" shirts, then let him.

In other news, Texas Tech is actually starting to look pretty good.  The Big 12 doesn't have a standout team but the middle is really good for a middle.

I mean I'm not saying I'm against them getting a little cut but it needs to be a small cut, otherwise what the fuck is the point of the NFL if kids are getting their wallets loaded before they even make it up there.

And it's also soooooo much more complicated than people think. They're like, "oh just pay them". Problem solved. Lol'd. 95% of college football are not going to the NFL and nobody knows who the fuck they are. Do they deserve to get paid? The stars (like a Manziel or a Clowney for example) should get paid the most, correct? Would there be a pay scale on what your individual draw is or does everybody get the same, flat rate? And big time college football programs should get more too, obviously. If USC and University of North Texas are playing, obviously everyone tuning in will be watching to see USC outside the family members of UNT players. I don't really see how this would work.

The point of the NFL is to serve as entertainment... What does that have to do with anything?

Of course it's not simple. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. It's probably not as hard to figure out as you're saying either. The biggest problem is that people (either for or against it) have this idea that it needs to be "fair". Why does it have to be fair? What other industry in the rest of the country has "fair" pay. The 95% of people that no one knows about don't need to make money, or at least as much money. Those are the people that you can point to and say "Look, they get to go to a university for free on a year by year basis, they get to be on TV, they get to play college sports." Throw 'em some extra money, stipends, whatever. Let players who sell jerseys see profits from jersey sales, let players be in commercials. Those are the guys who deserve to make more and who would make more.

This I really have no problem with on the surface, but I still worry about the effect it would have on the NFL. Athletes getting rich before they even step onto a professional field.

I will say though this is the best suggestion I've heard tho.

I don't think that suggestion has any purpose. It would just have end up with schools either paying third parties to associate with them or schools like Ohio State that have absurd alumni bases would get it for free. It's pointless and would just create more rules to be broken.

Assuming you're talking about the first part. At the very least the NCAA could (and should) start allowing players to make money on merchandising. It's absolutely ridiculous that everyone else gets a piece of that pie except them when it's incredibly easy to track how much they should be making.

Fair enough, I guess. I really don't give a fuck to be honest. But it's not gonna happen anyways. So all this is moot.

Yeah true. That's why if I had to take a stance I would be against it. Pay your dues, Jesus Christ. It's a few fucking years. The good ones are gone after two anyways these days. And if you're a popular enough athlete and good enough, and just can't wait to get fucking paid, go the NFL. Pay your two year dues and go play with the big boys.

Anyways I'm done these arguments are retarded and just go in circles. Later.

The thing is I don't think it would be all that complicated or have too many unintended consequences - because it would basically be the system we already have, just people could be honest about it.

In theory, yeah, but lots of kids get injured before they make it to the NFL.

I guess I just don't see a point in not letting the universities do it outright when they would ultimately just be paying third parties to pay their players. Seems like a waste.

Okay that's right. Well you can leave after your sophomore year if you redshirted but since that doesn't apply to everybody I'll go with 3 years. Still, what the fuck ever. I say pay your dues and then go and get those multi-million dollar NFL contracts. Damn it why am I still here

How isn't it sacrificing your integrity? You are supposed to be an amateur "student" (clearly homie has never been to a class in his life) athlete, and until that changes get fucked you cheating cunt. Honestly i had a little sympathy until i realized he IS in fact legally retarded.

It's not because the idea of football players as both amateur and students has been a fiction for decades, if not since the invention of college sports.  And a very thinly-veiled fiction at that.  I also don't see any real reason to care that these guys are paid for their work just the way other types of entertainers are.  No skin off my back.

Bullshit... There is most certainly such thing as a student athlete. Just because you are good at sports doesn't mean you have a free pass to be a retard. I have a friend who plays for stanford and he is smart as fuck and fortunate enough to be 6'4 300. Not knowing how to speak is pure and utter laziness.

Now i would have no problem with him being paid If: 1. He was literate 2. If other players got paid.

Exactly how is that not payment enough??? Hell i wish i could get a free degree from a nice school just for playing ball, smoking weed, and getting endless head.

You are right though sonam. I would love it if they paid these guys for stuff that would actually help them in society. Not spider 2y bannaner, watch mike watch mike.

That has so much intellectual depth

Just read the SI stuff on the drugs at OKSU...

Quote:

Defensive end William Bell told SI that he was a "borderline pothead" when he arrived as a freshman in 2004 and that he quickly learned he was not alone. He saw an opportunity and began bringing marijuana from his hometown of Belton, Texas, to Stillwater, selling blunts for $10 and quarter ounces for $30.

Sheesh, gotta get to Belton.

It also said sometimes players dipped their weed in formaldehyde () and one guy drank bleach to help him piss clean for a drug test...half the story's about how the team drug counselor wasn't qualified and didn't do shit...they should have just hired a pothead who could teach them how to do drugs right.
