I am sure this question has been asked 100 times before, but with times changing and technology evolving I'll put it to you again.
I am looking for a camera at a reasonable price that will be very good for taking macro shots. (in addition to the occasional 'normal' photograph)
Please keep in mind I am not a photographer and know nothing about lenses etc so all advice is helpful.

What budget? Are you looking for a reflex camera (one of the chunky things with interchangeable lenses) or a compact camera?

Max a couple hundred.
I'd rather have a compact camera as lenses are expensive?

Also check www.pbase.com/cameras Although keep in mind that you're mostly looking at the skill of the photographers, not so much the capability of the cameras (the latter usually surpasses the former).
Any compact camera at a price level of > $250 will take stellar macro shots. Make sure you get one with image stabilization / vibration reduction (pretty standard these days on mid-range models), a tripod mount and preferably the possibility to attach an external flash unit. In that sense, something like the Canon G10 is ideal, since it is compatible with Canon's range of EX flash units.

I'm saving up for a $140 DSLR. But honestly, newer small digital cameras are terrible unless you get to the $300 range which is just not worth it. Ever notice that webcams are mostly awful on many computers and iPad cameras are just terrible generally? That's because we assume that technology is always transferable/better, but it's becoming worse before becoming better.
Try this - http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-S4200-Digital-Camera/dp/B006T7QWGO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377983670&sr=8-3&keywords=dslr+camera.

Huh? Mobile phone cameras have improved dramatically over the past few years. I also don't see how the $300 range of digital compacts wouldn't make sense; they're a great solution for anyone who doesn't want to haul around several lbs. of equipment and spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on lenses.

mobile phone shots look good on phones, but once you blow it up on the comp it looks like crap.
