What do you all think about this chick? I dont think she is on a downward slope like many people think. Of all the young, ex-disney esque actresses, She seems like she is the only one who isnt a complete fuck-up. She is obviously having fun, like showing off her ass all the time.. But its not a cry for help and it doesnt really seem shes doing it for popularity or publicity. Seems she does it more because of how comfortable she is with herself and does not worry about what the rest of the world has to say about her. I just think she is a genuine person loves the fact that she went from a Disney chick to one of the top sex symbols of this generation. And she is doing all this without putting out a porn video... or "accidentally" showing off her freshly shaved vagina when stepping out of cars! or any other shameful acts.
Im not going to pretend that I know all about this chick. I read what people post on the Shroomery and hear what people say when her name is brought up. IMO, I think she is one of the most emotionally stable of the famous younger people. She is not doing all these things because of an identity crisis or anything. I think she does it because she is comfortable with who she is, both inside and out It will only be a matter of time where we hear she is taking psychedelics and going to India to learn more about the universe
I might be stretching it with that last comment, but does anyone else have similar views about this chick? Where do you think she will be in 3-4 years? a complete junky laying in the gutter? or meditating on the top of some mountain?

Personally I think it's a stretch. Probably an obvious influence, but doesn't really seem lawsuit worthy.
Then again I couldn't even being to tell you if it's the same chord progression or not, I'm sure someone who knows a bit more about music (and music theory) would have a better say than I.

I'm glad she did what she did. Women should be just as free to be sexual as men. She's an unwitting soldier in the fight for sexual equality. Anyone who disses her for what she did is a straight up prude who, whether they know it or not, wants to repress female sexuality.

I think what she did made her look like a sex object more than anything.
I'm all for sexual expression. I think it's irritating when women have to resort to sexual objectification to get any attention. I just watched it for the first and only time, it was literally like a few seconds of twerking or whatever. I'm not saying it's trashy or anything like that, I just think she was an object in that performance. She wasn't showing off any talent, she was a prop and that's it. I'm all for freedom of sexual expression. I'm against things that reinforce the idea that women are sexual objects and nothing more, so that's why I think it was a shitty performance. I'd never call her a whore, trashy or whatever everyone else seems to be saying right now.

I think the concept of the term "sex object" suggests female sexual repression in and of itself. When is it not okay for women to be sexy? How sexy can they be before it's "bad"? Why is it not okay to use sexuality to promote yourself or to make money?
The answer is it's all good and there should be no judgments. But we've all been programed to think that women should only have sex for reproduction. Any sex or sexuality that isn't for reproduction is a little "off" in our subconscious because we've been brainwashed.

I have not been brainwashed to think that. Sex for reproduction is the least important aspect in my own life.
When you're supposed to be performing showing your talents and all you have to get people's attention is acting like you're having sex, you're reinforcing the idea that women are only useful for their sexual abilities.
It's not that she was sexy that I'm saying is not okay (btw I don't think what she did was sexy at all) it's the simple fact that she relied entirely upon sexualization rather than talent. If she did the exact same thing and actually showed off her vocal talents as well, it would have been totally neutral in my mind. However, instead of showing off her own abilities in that part of the performance she was nothing more than a prop for her male counterpart.

True that, viv! While many of us bashed her (including myself) to pieces, and a large number of her Hollywood colleagues did so as well...that girl is still sporting a 150 million dollar net worth in that bank account of hers.

So how sexy can a woman be? Don't you realize that if you were to go to certain parts of the middle east, wearing what YOU normally wear, and sung a song, you'd be considered trashy because you aren't wearing a bee keepers outfit? People would say "Joie is relying only on her sexuality because we can see more than her eyes".

She wasn't singing. She was backing him up and hardly contributing any vocals whatsoever.

But I never called her trashy. In fact I flat out said that if she were actually showing off any talent whatsoever and wearing/doing the exact same thing I'd have no problem with it. Hell, if she were completely naked and doing the same thing I wouldn't care as long as she was making herself more than just a prop for Mr. Thicke. I think her performance reinforced the idea that the most useful thing a woman can contribute is her sexuality, that's all that she contributed to that aspect of the performance.

That's a good point, you see I don't think she's trashy because of the way she dresses alone, I think she's trashy because all her fans are young kids who're impressionable and naive. I remember a few years ago I was in a library and there was this 4-year old kid talking about her mily cyres fandom and if the kid is still looking up to her now... well, now do you guys understand why I still think it's not only trashy but retarded? (not hating on the autists here just using it as an insult) She's not "taking hold of her sexuality", she's just lip-syncing while dressed in a silly outfit while surrounded by furies. Taking hold of your sexuality is something you do when you've been sexually repressed.

She was showing talent. She's an entertainer. And she entertained people. Just because you weren't entertained doesn't mean she didn't. And I think your ratio of clothing vs. talent idea is interesting. So if you're really talented you can be naked. If you're not talented you should, what, wear a Muslim woman's bee keepers outfit? Who gets to be the final judge on who is talented?

She wasn't showing talent. She wasn't even singing. She licked his neck, twerked a bit, moaned and made other sexual noises but none of it was talented and all of it was focused on one thing: her being a sexual object.
You keep putting words in my mouth. I never once disapproved of what she was wearing. I'm not saying she should have been more dressed. I could care less about what she was wearing, I don't think human skin is offensive or inherently bad. I'm talking about the role she played on stage, which was as Robin Thicke's sexual object.

It takes talent to hump someone?
Why is it that any time someone has a not 100% positive opinion of something someone else did, they must be jealous?

I wouldn't call that talent.
Talent is the Asian woman on Americas Got Talent who can sit on a 8 foot unicycle and kick bowls and plates onto her head without falling.
In my opinion singing and dancing isn't really talent.

I don't think you saw the whole video. She sang like one and a half songs before Thicke even came onstage with her. She changed outfits from a one piece to the two piece latex thing underneath. Not that you need to see the whole thing, but you keep saying she wasn't singing when in fact, she was... just not very well.

If anything it's probably less socially acceptable for men to dance in an overtly sexual manner than it is for women. Men and women alike often seem to find it gross to watch for whatever reason. A woman has to go that extra mile to reach that grossout point it would seem.

He was singing his song for Pete's sake! It wasn't exactly a duet. It was just staged for him to come out while she remained. They are both adults. I am sure that if one of them didn't want to be onstage with the other that would have been arranged.

You mean like he was an object? What's wrong with her playing that part during the performance? What's wrong with a woman being sexual? Maybe she's breaking down sexual barriers. Maybe she's saying "We woman like being sexy. We like sex. We like it when men look at us with desire. Free yourselves from your self imposed sexual prison and join me in celebrating one of life's greatest joys - sexual freedom."

When you say something and there's only one logical reason for you to say it, then yes, I think I know what your view is. No offense, but I think you're jealous that Miley has the guts to show her body and her robust sex drive in front of the world. You haven't found the courage yet to let the world see your true sexual nature like Miley has. It's okay. We're all oppressed to some degree. Myself included. I wish I could show the world my cock, but I'm too afraid to. But when another man does it, I salute him. Not knock him.

Are you reading my posts Leary? I have no problem with women being sexual, I myself greatly enjoy sex and I think sexual freedom is important. However, I think our culture focuses too much on women's primary contribution being their sexuality and sexual abilities. I like a woman being able to be sexy, and I'm all for that.

Are you being serious here? You're projecting so hard. I'm not at all interested in showing my body or robust sex drive to the world. I'm not jealous, I'm perfectly satisfied in that area of my life and I don't think a biological drive is something necessarily to be proud of or that I need to show to the world for validation.

Your posts continually seem to imply that I'm saying either one of them was forced into it. I know they both wanted the gig. If you read my opinion on the subject, my problem with the whole thing is that I think it feeds more into the idea that women are most important for what they can offer sexually - which is pretty much the theme of most top 40 music like we see at the VMAs anyway so I wouldn't expect anything much different from that caliber of an "awards show".

Well the world is making fun of her and calling her names for doing it. Most people aren't praising her for it. It seems to me that the world is saying "Shame on you Miley. Put your long dress back on and get into the kitchen. When it's breeding time, you may then engage in sex with your husband." But I say fuck that. They're all a bunch of uptight prudes. Feminists like Joie are conflicted with the expression of female sexuality, they like having the ability and freedom to openly express themselves (pornography), but at the same time they find the act of presenting their sexuality somewhat degrading (since men enjoy it).

Did you read any posts of mine in this thread? It's not her presentation of sexuality that I found degrading, it's the fact that it just once again emphasized the idea that pervades our culture - the most important thing a woman has to offer is her sexuality. There was virtually no musical talent by Miley in that section, it was just her being a sexual prop for Thicke. The music video for the song is pretty much the same way, but it's a bunch of no-name extras rather than a Disney star so people cared a little less about that. The performance was NOT a woman liberating herself sexually or expressing sexual freedom it was her being as sexual object and the twerking she did was absolutely the norm for our culture, people only freaked out because she was on Disney and her suit was nude colored.
Please don't assume things about me just because you disagree with me and label me a "feminist".

That's your opinion, while female sexuality is very important, it doesn't mean it's the only thing a female has to offer.
Why did women fight so hard to freely express their sexuality in a public forum? Now that they have it, you are pissing on that very liberation. You would be complaining how unfair and discriminatory it would be if it wasn't socially acceptable to do what Cyrus was voluntarily able to do, talk about never being satisfied.

She doesn't have enough ass to twerk it.
Know why I don't helicopter dick? Because my dick isn't of suitable windmill size.
I will, however, get naked amongst almost anyone...

I went on a rant at work about how I'd watch Mr. Hands, One Guy One Jar, or Two Girls One Cup before the VMA's today.
It was a long and graphic rant.

She looked and acted like a total retard. Her dancing took absolutely no skill and the concept was really stupid. It wasn't shocking at all. Everyone has seen shit like this before. It's really lame that she thought it was shocking though and that she thinks anyone cares about her growing up and acting like a rebel. The only people who were shocked were the parents of her child fans, the very people she is trying to distance herself from. Any rational adult watching would have realized how childish and stupid she looked. The only thing that was shocking was how ugly she looked. It was like watching the worst singers audition for American Idol but who are still confident.

JoieDeVivre said: There was virtually no musical talent by Miley in that section, it was just her being a sexual prop for Thicke.
This is why I like Lady Gaga.
Her performance, albeit not to everyone's tastes or standards, actually featured talent. She actually had a pretty well-choreographed dance.
Gaga's performance:
The way I look at it. I contrast Miley's and Gaga's performances. Miley is 20 and Lady Gaga is in her late 20's. When one is as young as Miley, they are seeking to understand their identity. Part of that is extreme behaviour which serves to help them understand who they really want to be. Gaga has passed that stage and understands who she wants to be, and hence a much more confident and solid performance.

 LEAVE MILEY ALONE
in all seriousness, I know this girl who has no self control when it comes to eating speed, and when she gets really loose on it her tongue hangs out of her mouth and flapss around all crazy like it did in the mtv video. my first and only thought through the whole thing was "man that chick is loose as fuck on something"
the part where she starts fingerbanging herself with the foam hand was when I considered suicide

Its an identity crises
She is FAR from being a sex symbol....she wishes she was one though
She's trashy and disrespectful. Just another spoiled brat who thinks she knows crap about the world because she has cameras on her.

Obvious satire is obvious.
The goodie-two-shoes Disney princess turned sex object meme has been repeated ad nauseum for decades. The Teenage Rebellion Industrial Complex has monetized and commodified Rebelliontm to the point that it poses no danger to their regime, and is quite profitable, besides.
"The youth will never rise up and overthrow us.", they think, "To what, then, would they twerk?"
Then along comes General Cyrus waging a campaign of total destruction on their precious formula, possibly breaking it forever...

with her interpretive dance symbolizing the relationship between the American public and it's corporate overlords.

She doesn't need to do anything to stay rich. She could stop now, and just be rich if she wanted to. She doesn't care about making more money from her performing career.
She just does that for the lulz.

This thread is hilarious because my sociology teacher on Thursday the first day of class asked; If we were tired of hearing about Miley Cyrus. Judging by the popularity of this thread definetly not. I obviously would never mention anything about shroomery in class so I said nothing.

Alright, I'll give you that. Guess I'm just offended at her total disregard for public decency. Its not sexy its offensive and slutty. And if u say that shes just reflecting who she really is on the inside, and being herself, the n I guess that would make her a skank. Guess what. lulz.

JoieDeVivre said: I have not been brainwashed to think that.
It's said that "rock and roll" is really a euphemistic term for fucking. Sex has long been intertwined almost inextricably with popular music. Even way back in the day when elvis first shook his hips and cameramen were nervous to pan back and show below the waist. Was Elvis objectifying himself? Was his provocatively shaking his hips a declaration that all he had to offer was sex appeal?
I think it's something of a matter of point of view, and I find it kind of surprising and sad that someone with a proclaimed view like yours would choose to look at someone like Miley in a way that demeans and objectifies, rather than empowers. Maybe Miley, like Elvis, is saying -- "Look at how young, and free, and confident, and sexy, and 'in charge' I am. PS-- I know you want it. PPS-- You can't have any."
I'm sorry-- but I just don't see what's demeaning or objectifying about that. Sure, it may look like she's selling her sexuality, but if her sexuality is a part of her music, that sort of does make sense. And personally, I find it more demeaning toward women to have the attitude of: "You're wrong for exploring your sexuality in a way that I don't approve of." How is using the old-world "women should be pure, chaste creatures except with their husbands" paradigm in any way liberating for modern women?
PS-- To address the other question: I've never really been all that attracted to her... or really even noticed her much, for that matter. But for some reason the recent antics have flipped me the other way. Which is doubly weird for me, because usually the "punk-y" butch look is more of a turn off than anything for me. But she somehow pulls it off.

How old is she anyway? 22?
Oh, yeah, totally. That old geezer. Over 30? That's just creepy. Practically a mummy, at that age. /sarcasm
What are you, twelve?
PS-- Fuck you.
PPS-- I'm a few years past 30, and not only do I get mistaken for being in my 20's all the time, I could probably out-fuck your BF any day of the week.
You should think about your future, and be nice to your elders. We're all headed in the same direction. One day, sweetheart, your little titties are going to sag down to your belly-button. You'll gain 30 pounds (maybe more, if you have kids) and your pussy...well, I'll stop there... One day you'll find yourself wondering if your man isn't starting to look at younger, skinnier, tighter women (like Miley, ironically enough)... and whether he finds you attractive any more. And you'll think back to this thread, and how you once thought it was "gross" for a young girl to grind with a guy over 30.
*edit* refraining from comment that is actually mean
PPPS-- No, seriously.... fuck you, kiddo.

Miley looks like an extremely ugly 16 year old wannabe punk. All she showed with that performance is that she's still a child. She doesn't even know what "sexy" is. Her sniffing of the fat woman's ass and frequent sticking out of her tongue prove this.

Hell, if she were completely naked and doing the same thing I wouldn't care as long as she was making herself more than just a prop for Mr. Thicke.
Who gets to be the final judge on who is talented?
you are making some good points, here, Leary. i think people are putting themselves on a pedestal, and dissing this Miley chick because they feel she's inferior, when really, she is just doing what everyone else is doing.
i think people are projecting their insecurities, here, and i think it's particularly sad, because they are using this pop queen thingy as a prop for their projections, when that is ornately vain and only subtly "worse off" then the vast amounts of people here "who can do no harm", as they see it; even though they are making all the same mistakes people make in life.
using a "scapegoat" sorta, of immense proportions. yes, we can all agree mass media and what you see on TV is usually gay.
you know, my favorite thing ever, is when someone says "they don't watch TV, as it's trash that rots your brain." yet they watch shows that were MADE for TV ON THEINTERNET.
sounds like it boils down to "my trash is better then your trash", in these kinds of topics.

Someone definitely needs to stop her from polluting the children's minds.

At least she can sing, regardless if you like her style or not (same goes with me here) she actually has somewhat of a talent.
Paris Hilton anyone? Why's she famous again

I have no love for Miley, but her new whatever you want to call it, has made her possibly the most talked about celebrity in the world for the moment. Kudos to her for working the publicity
