Nature Boy said: I wouldn't celebrate too soon. They have reserved their right to file a preemption lawsuit at a later date. This is actually a smart move. The Federal Government has no standing to sue right now, as the state laws have not been fully implemented, so their cause of action is not "ripe" and their lawsuit would be dismissed for failure to state a valid cause of action.
The US government is a two-faced lying bitch. Don't get your hopes up just yet...you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.
N.B.
Although you're probably right, this move by the government gives the cannabis industry and movement an opportunity to further establish itself and gain legs.
Its easy to be cynical about the government and speculate what they MIGHT do in the future. the way things are going though, nearly 25 states have medical laws, and your average joe's opinion on cannabis is changing VERY quickly.
Even slightly good news is amazing news, they could have easily come out today with the same stance they've maintained for the past 7 months: "We do not condone legalization, we will continue to prosecute" but instead are giving it a chance.
I honestly believe as more states see the feds mind their own business, you'll start to see more and more laws enacted. Eventually, they won't be able to prosecute the whole country.

A positive sign but as others have said, it means little. Pay no attention to what obama and his cronies say but watch closely what they do. He has lied constantly on this subject and it would be very premature to believe him now.
Maybe just maybe it will work out?

Since when did Eric Holder have any say in a law on the books in Washington and Colorado? And since when do we believe anything he says.

True. Reality is a bitter shit sandwich that we all must eat one bite at a time. We can put what ever kind of condiments on it we want, but at the end of the day it's still the same shit.

I don't like smoking weed very often but I still hope it will become legal even though I usually rarely see anything good coming from smoking everyday but I don't see anything good from smoking cigs everyday either
One destroys mind, one destroys body if used everyday
Use with moderation..
But it's good for freedom.....
Smoke, make your contribution, go a little early, but have fun until then..
Mail all your governors/politicians and inform people around you , and change your own way of interacting with people , that's how you can change culture Be political active
Drug laws are due to no acceptance in society We must accept others to reverse it, no judging Realize we are all the same...
I think this is a step in the right direction but laws don't change by politics, laws change due to society changing Change ourselves to change society
peace
btw I used to smoke up to 1/8th of the best stuff everyday (skunk or hash), but I quit

Also my reason for smoking everyday was kidney stone pain that I had no pain pills for....
Cannabis helps a lot with that if you smoke enough, as much as morphine..!
Good for chronic pain patients... no side effects except munchies... all the pills I got had many many side effects and they were more addictive than weed everyday too when I stopped using them I got cramps, my heart beat weird/very slowly, my arms and legs started cramping at weird times, no energy so little I hardly could lay down due to it , felt like my heart stopping beating each time I took those pills (tramadol), couldn't speak or hear anything when I took them , could only lay down when I ate them, couldn't pee for a day each time I took them, everytime I layed down it felt like my heart stopping beating if I didn't move and would get cramps too (from a normal dose of tramadol 1-2 pills)
weed I could almost function normally on, morphine was a little better (didn't even know I had taken pills with that, function as normally - docs just wont prescribe it more than a few days in total)
but none of those side effects from weed, it was just expensive, like $25 a day for no pain vs $0.20 a day for tramadol
all side effects from weed were purely mental no panic attacks from weed, but I did get a mild panic attack from tramadol once but got much paranoia from weed , mostly due to society looking down on it and it being illegal (stood in the door looking out thought someone was at the door all the time lol) wouldn't walk directly home etc. due to paranoia
paranoia was temporary.. generally have no problems smoking as much weed as I want, paranoia, laziness & munchies are the only side effect for me (that's why I wouldn't use everyday except with careful moderation, unless I was a chronic pain patient)

This seems like a step in the right direction.
I rarely smoke myself. But I look at the current trend, and with that statement by Holder made public. I think its a pretty big deal.
If the Feds are going to make a public statement that they are going to allow this social experiment to continue without persecution, then I fully expect it to grow bigger than they anticipate in short order.
California has already taken a shot at legalization. I expect Oregon to be on the same page. Maybe Arizona too. Thats a pretty big chunk of the West. Though I dont see Idaho, or Utah jumping on this opportunity, maybe Montana and Wyoming, maybe.

Montana has waded into the medical pool a bit. Last summer I got the opportunity to smoke some Montana Medical and eat some stellar medical cookies and let me tell you, they're onto something. Wyoming is a mixed bag. There are plenty of tokers, but there are also a lot of "good ol' boy" cowboy types who would rather swill Keystone and whiskey than have anything to do with "that damn dope".
