First psilocybin experience * 1
    #18772386 - 08/29/13 10:23 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So about 6 months ago I had my first experience with psilocybin. It was unlike anything I expected and a much richer experience than I realized. Beyond the vibrant colors and interesting patterns I recognized in nature, I was most impressed with the change in attitude about living and being that it seems to encourage.

My friend and I took a short camping trip up to the sierra mountains. We found a secluded area surrounded by stands of cedar and douglas fir trees. The weather reports showed a slight chance of rain but were needing an adventure and decided to forge ahead anyway.

I previously measured out about 2 grams of Golden Teacher powder for each of us and planned on putting the powder in lemonade for ingestion. After setting up our equipment we went ahead and took our dose at around 2pm I believe. We sat in camping chairs relaxing before the shrooms kicked in. I started to notice a bit of tingling or fuzzy feeling in my body and realized that it was starting to kick in. The first unusual thing I noticed was how much the massive trees around use were swaying back and forth. Their branches just wiggling around like they are doing a dance. All the smaller trees around us seemed to be much closer than before and were closing in.

My buddy suggested that we take a little walk to explore. At first I just wanted to sit in my chair and melt but agreed to go. As we start walking I noticed that everything just became much brighter. It was as if the clouds had parted and the sun came up except when I looked up there was only dark clouds. All the lichens on the tree were a vibrant green of an intensity I had never seen. Every edge of everything around me seemed defined and outlined like I was inside of a comic book.

We ended up walking into a clearing and it felt like being in an enclosed space like a snowglobe. The wind swirled through the trees and it sounded like being near the ocean or putting head up to a sea shell. I noticed a shotgun shell on the ground and kicked it. The noise echoed like clink clink clink and sounded like I was in an empty warehouse except I was in the middle of the forest. All of the bark of the ponderosa pines was blotted with purple which spiraled up the trunks of the trees. It was incredibly beautiful.

By the time we made it back to our camp it started to rain a little bit. The temperature seemed to have dropped 10 degrees and I could see my breath. I looked up at the sky and could watch individual rain drops falling like little bombs from the sky and exploding onto my jacket. From then on the weather was very intermittent. It would rain for 10 mins and stop for awhile, then rain some more. This created a very chaotic situation. We became very worried about our wood getting wet and tried our best to keep it dry. The short spurts of rain seemed to last forever and started to worry us since without fire it was going to be a very cold night.

The fluctuating weather intensified the roller coaster ride greatly. One moment I was joyous the next moment I was bummed out. This was the same for my buddy and our trip seemed to be phasing in and out with each other. Sometimes we would be in phase and both be happy or bummed. Other times we were out of phase and I would be happy and he bummed ect.

While coming down I experienced the most mental clarity I think I have ever felt. Sitting by the fire I felt cleansed of all stress and anxiety and was able to just sit in silence and be completely comfortable and in awe of the world. I came to the conclusion that the ups and downs of my trip became a lesson for how to live my life. It taught me that there will always be struggles in my life. I can choose to deny them and always be yearning for something better, or I can just accept the struggles as they come knowing that eventually I will be on the upside of things. I had a profound realization that struggle/pain and joy/peace come from the same birth. They are two sides of the same coin. Without suffering there is no joy. Without joy there can be no suffering.

Another quality of my experience is the impact of the insights gained from shrooms. They seem to hit you like a ton of bricks and are felt like an understanding that resonates in your entire being. I can read or hear profound things but they stay up in my rational mind. I may know that they are true but it is not the same truth of the insights I feel from the shrooms.

Since my experience I have found it much easier to be present in the moment and not worry so much about the future or dwell on the past. I am more open to ideas I was never open to before like ideas about spirituality or the ideas about God. Overall, I feel I am more capable of dealing with adversity since I am much more focused on the now and not tangled up in my imagination of what is going to happen.

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this. I appreciate everyone here for their knowledge and advice and going about these types of experiences. I have already had two successful small grows and one more on the way

Yeah I have done shrooms twice so far and both on camping trips. It is so much fun to go out and adventure after you peak and just see the beauty of the natural world. For my next trip i'm thinking about doing something solo either at home or somewhere quiet. Not in a hurry though since I feel like im still cultivating and integrating my last experience.

I love the way you use words. You should write more trip reports.

This bit really resonated with me:

Someone VERY close to me who had a drinking problem, when I asked what was the thing that was wanting to be escaped from, I was told the 'ups and downs of life', and I have heard this from others who have had destructive habits, including myself. So your insight is very deep. And it gives me an excuse to share with you this amazing article I read last night which I found one of the most profound things I have read. I am really interested in the connection between the mental illness myth and the psychedelic movement. THAT the insights people who see through the mental illness myth are of similar ilk to how psychedelic experience can help us see through myths and understand what life means--as you are learning: "Mental Illness", the DSM-5, and Dreams for a Post-Psychiatry World ...

Thanks dude I will check it out. I was watching this ted talk by this brilliant kid with autism who is studying quantum physics and the way that he describes how his thinking process works reminded me a bit about the mindset in a psychedelic experience.

also if you aren't already familiar with Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris you might be interested in some of the research he and his team are doing studying how psilocybin actually affects brain activity.
