Has anyone bought a new laptop or a hybrid/convertible lately?

I'm desperately in need of a new laptop and I primarily want to know if any of you guys have tried out some of the newer laptops or hybrids. I really love the idea of the convertible laptops where you can actually remove the screen and use it as a tablet, I'm hoping some of my fellow pubbers have input as to whether these are worth the (somewhat) hefty price tag or not.
And if anyone wants to give me recommendations on laptops to check out I'll add a little about what I'm looking for:
- <$1000
- decent hard drive space and battery life
- ideally something that will last at least four years (six would be better, but four is essential) - all of my laptops have lasted ~ 2 years before beginning to slowly die off and I'm tired of the lack of reliability there
- something that is portable
- something that is easy to take notes on (which is why I love the idea of convertible/hybrids)
- Something with a haswell [or equivalent] processor (either an i5 or an i7 would be ideal)
- NOT an ultra book or a stand alone tablet, I want something with the full capability of a mid-high end laptop
- decent webcam
- I would LOVE something I could game on as well, but that's a last priority
Also, what is up with these "portable" desktops? Has anyone used one of these? Can you actually carry them around and use them as you would a tablet/laptop?
TL;DR: Tell me about your experience with newer laptops. Which ones suck, which aren't worth the money, which are incredible, which are reliable etc.

I got a new Windows 8 touch screen laptop recently, and all I have to say is steer clear from windows 8.
I'm sure you already know about new egg but it really is the place to go. http://www.newegg.com/Laptops-Notebooks/SubCategory/ID-32

I never buy used computers, they're always cheaper but I'm very wary about doing that just because I know how quickly my brand new computers start to have issues.
So many conflicting opinions about Windows 8.

I have a Dell i5 Inspiron. Does everything I need it to: email, word, excel, browsing, music, data analysis, etc. etc. Kinda funny that my 4-5 year old laptop does exactly the same things.
I still take notes the old school way, with a pen.
For any actual data management or multi-tasking, no laptop compares to dual screen 24" monitors.
Kinda sounds like your primary need is a convertible. Looks like those can be had pretty cheap.

I've heard people say that Windows 8 is not too bad if you download the mod that brings back the start menu. I used it for about an hour on a VM and found it frustrating. So many basic functions are pretty near impossible to find by looking around. Even figuring out how to shut down the OS was a mystery. The task manager looked improved though.

naw seriously, like I said it takes a few weeks to get used to, but once you are familiar with the new interface it > all
it hasn't crashed. ever.
you know that "end process" bullshit in the task manager?
taken care of.
"end task" now ACTUALLY kills things.
that is 1 of 100000000 better things in windows 8

Perhaps I will give it a shot again sometime. It just seemed like they focused more on trying to have a clean looking interface than they did on making it straightforward to figure out how to do things.

Has no one used an actual convertible? Come on guys, get with the times.
They look awesome but I'm scared to be the first person I know to buy one. I haven't even seen any in classes yet which is weird because as soon as the tablets with the thin, crappy keyboards came out every single person in every class I had seemed to get one.

One thing to keep in mind with the windows tablets is that some have ARM CPUs and some have X86/X64 ones. The ARM ones are better on battery life but they won't run programs for normal windows.

We've been discussing laptops in the Science&Tech forum a lot the past few weeks.
General consensus seems to be this one is the best bang for your buck right now around the 1k price range: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312835
You probably wont find anything better than that in that price range.. only thing is it's a little heavy.
This one also looks like a real good option http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152409
Or a little cheaper.... http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/
If you want a convertible, these are the best http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/thinkpad/thinkpad-helix/ but no sense paying several hundred extra just for a "convertible" that has inferior hardware than other regular laptops. With a convertible, you WILL pay a higher premium than you would otherwise, for LESS powerful specs.
tl:dr: Buy Lenovo.
Fuck Windows 8. although it's probably gonna come by default with ANY newer laptop. First thing I'd do is format and install 7.

For Laptop you absolutely cannot go wrong. They use the highest quality parts and construction, they skip no corners like many other manufacturers do. They are generally a little bit pricier than other brands, but for a good goddamn reason. Also they ALWAYS have the highest end hardware in their "good" laptops. For example when most laptops are running around offering 4GB of RAM and a 5400RPM HDD, lots of Lenovos were offering 12GB of RAM and SSDs.. they are just always ahead of the curve. Laptop brand of choice for most hackers.

I love my lenovo y580, slick, powerful enough to game on. Dunno what to tell ya about convertables or touchscreens, I've never once felt like I needed it
I have to weigh in on the Win8 talk though. If your only complaint is about the start button, GTFO The start page is in the same spot -bottom left- It has everything there and you can use the scroll wheel so actually, it's faster than the old shit. If you cannot figure out how to use it, you're an idiot. Yes, finding the shutdown button and searching for other programs is hard THE FIRST TWO TIMES YOU USE IT. Other than that, it's windows, you have a desktop, you install firefox, and everything works 99% of the time. Plus other new features that I won't bother telling the haters about.

As for Windows 8, I hate it simply from a technical support perspective, and what Microsoft did to it. Start Menu or Not. Fuck. Windows. 8.
Do you know how to get into Safe Mode with Windows 8 from BIOS? Compared to Windows 7?
Well it's a fucking 12 step convoluted process. Getting into safe mode in windows 7 is by pressing F8. It's just the little things.
It offers no amazing advancements that Win 7 doesn't already have. The only thing I've seen that Windows 8 has on 7, is a little bit more intelligent in automatically handling multiple monitor support. But in other areas I feel it went backwards.
Anyway, it's not a COMPLETE failure like Vista or anything. It runs well enough, All it is, is Windows 7 with a few features added, and others fucked with. But lots of people myself included are skipping it. I deal with it enough with everyone I talk to everyday.
Oh and don't get me started about Fast Boot compatibility issues. We will be here all day

Windows 8 runs smoothly for the most part, except recently I've been having some issues with certain apps. But the setup is pretty fucking rediculous, it could use a few changes for sure.
I downloaded the start menu so that makes things a bit easier, but it's not the only issue.

How are Lenovo's low end tablets? I saw an ad the other day for a $130 7" Lenovo tablet and I was wondering if they're any good. Obviously I wouldn't expect anything high performing for that price but is the build quality decent at least?

IBM used to make pro quality laptops etc (e.g. the Thinkpad line) but they sold off the division that did that IIRC. Lenovo essentially makes the type of equipment that IBM used to under the some of the same branding.

I've heard Lenovo was quite good, but they are mostly on the higher end of my budget which is something I was looking to avoid.
I wish the helix was a few hundred less expensive, it doesn't even have a Haswell so I don't see why it's so expensive. I guess because it is a convertible.
I'm still torn because I really want a convertible but I also want something with decent specs for a slightly lower price.

I don't know how to build a PC, and I'm pretty sure it would be more expensive AND it wouldn't be portable. I'm simply not looking for a stationary PC.
Side note: PC builders remind me of PC gamers in that any time you talk about buying a new computer they always come in and tell you the way they do it is superior (which is what PC gamers say about gaming literally every time I talk to them).

What I mean is this... you say gaming is a lower priority on your list, but it'd be nice, right?
You could build a PC to play the majority of recent games at high or maximum settings for $800 easily. Now, a $800 laptop on the other hand is barely gonna handle those same games at medium/low settings/lower resolution, and believe me that matters a lot.
Building a PC can take a couple hours of research/work though and if you don't like hands-on stuff and/or really need a mobile computer, lenovo is a good choice. For a laptop.
To each their own

It's not that I don't like hands-on things. I work, volunteer and have 18 credits worth of classes plus a teaching position so I'm simply not interested in building my own PC. Plus I don't even want a PC at all whatsoever, I want something portable.
Also tons of games don't come out for PCs until a very long time after they come out for consoles, and a gaming PC that could handle current/next gen console games would be more pricey than $800.

I am assuming she wants a laptop specifically for school and portability. You don't lug a desktop around to classes.
That said of course a desktop is always cheaper + greater components for your money.
Laptop you are paying more for portability. Smaller components.
Hybrids/convertibles I would avoid right now Joie. They are mostly a gimmick, and like I said you will end up paying MORE for something that has LESS power than a regular laptop around the same price. So it's not the best bang for your buck by any means at all.
The first Lenovo I linked will handle EVERYTHING you need it for, and should handle most games admirably. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312835
Just a little over your 1k budget, but I don't really think you can do better than that for that price. 8GB SSD is the kinda weakest point.. but it has a 1TB HDD. You could add a bigger SSD down the line if you wanted.

I bought a Dell for like 320 bucks from best buy and its probably the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned. I'd suggest not buying anything from those dicks, most of the computers they have are shit. Only reason I bought it was because I didn't feel like waiting a few days, and I regret it. I don't like touch screens for home computing, I would suggest against it personally.

Exactly, if I were just sitting at home with my computer I'd get a desktop PC or maybe be interested in building my own if I had the free time, which I don't anyway.
But convertibles are so cool!
The reason I'm really considering the touch screen/convertible option is because I want something super portable for in class but at the same time I want a higher powered laptop-esque computer for when I'm at home so I'm thinking a convertible could be the best of both worlds. However you're totally right about the cost of those, so I'm very torn.

I dunno, I mean the only way I can really justify spending over $1000 is if it's going to last me well over 3-4 years. How long do you think I could keep that one in good working condition for? 1 TB is probably way more than I'd ever need, so that might be going way above and beyond what I need.
But, then again, my boss did just tell me I'm getting a raise so...

Yeah, I'm avoiding Dell because I've heard many similar stories and every Dell I've ever used has been surpassed by virtually every other brand I've tried.

Eh I put $220 into a $480 prebuilt (total $700) almost a year ago and I run skyrim, bf3, etcetera on maxed settings/resolution smoothly. Considering I didn't even know what I was doing, I think you could do even better than I

It's not that I don't like hands-on things. I work, volunteer and have 18 credits worth of classes plus a teaching position so I'm simply not interested in building my own PC. Plus I don't even want a PC at all whatsoever, I want something portable.
As much as I feel laptops are overpriced and not so good, - laptops are so great for watching movies/tv episodes on while you're traveling or out of the home. anyway

My last high end laptop cost me 2k back in 2008, it is still going strong to this day (granted not top of the line anymore). But it was on 24/7 for 4 years. Used for heavy gaming. Traveled all around the country in a backpack. Still kicks ass
I'd be pissed if my laptops only lasted 2 years. Take care of them (clean out the dust REGULARLY, dont beat them the fuck up and they should last a long time. I've opened mine up completely two times to completely clean everything out.
It's never bad to have more HDD space than you need. It is bad to have not enough space and then need more. 1TB is not all that much these days anyway, not that hard to fill.

Higher capacity hard drives also have faster transfer speeds I believe so there's that. If I was in the market for a laptop I would want one that can take two drives so that I could have both a SSD and a HDD.

Yep exactly. Well not always, in some cases the 500GB/750GB platters are faster, but pish posh.. Definitely go with a laptop that has dual drives, that way you can run a large mechanical drive for mass storage (1TB or so), and a SSD for your OS drive for max performance.
OP if you absolutely must stay under 1k I think these are a good option - http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/

So Shroomism, you think convertibles are just a fad and they'll fade out pretty quickly? Any ideas what the next big pc thing will be? Just asking since you seem so knowledgeable about the PC world.

I don't think he meant to say they were a fad, but more of a flashy new expensive toy that's inferior to what's already out there at the moment. Yeah in the coming years they might be worth buying, but right now with them being so new, the better choice is obviously a laptop.
I mean when laptops first came, out I'm sure they weren't worth the trouble of buying one until they advanced a bit, and now they're taking over. Who knows maybe the same thing will happen with the convertables.

Ah, I see. I guess I've actually been noticing that trend on my own before this thread, anyway. I'm bummed, I really wanted a convertible but I think you're both right that right now they're artificially inflated as far as price goes and not top-of-the line for the most part.

Pretty much this.
Tech is constantly moving in the direction of smaller and more portable components, yet more powerful.
I mean look at 60 years ago, they had a "supercomputers" that took up the size of a huge room, yet a TI-85 calculator blows it away. Your average smartphone, has around 50,000x more processing power than the first space shuttle we sent to the moon Cell phones in the 80s were giant fucking bricks etc.
It will get there eventually. We'll see all kinds of crazy tech, but convertibles / hybrids being a relatively new thing, they are going to be artificially inflated until they become more popular/common then you might get much more of your money's worth. But right now you are going to end up paying more money, and getting less powerful components.

best keyboard layout, solid, durable. it works well. the screen kinda sucks but other than that I've had no problems with it. I've got a 2.5GHz i5 in mine with 4gb of ram. What else do you need in a laptop, unless you're photo editing or gaming??
