I love my lenovo y580, slick, powerful enough to game on. Dunno what to tell ya about convertables or touchscreens, I've never once felt like I needed it
I have to weigh in on the Win8 talk though. If your only complaint is about the start button, GTFO The start page is in the same spot -bottom left- It has everything there and you can use the scroll wheel so actually, it's faster than the old shit. If you cannot figure out how to use it, you're an idiot. Yes, finding the shutdown button and searching for other programs is hard THE FIRST TWO TIMES YOU USE IT. Other than that, it's windows, you have a desktop, you install firefox, and everything works 99% of the time. Plus other new features that I won't bother telling the haters about.

As for Windows 8, I hate it simply from a technical support perspective, and what Microsoft did to it. Start Menu or Not. Fuck. Windows. 8.
Do you know how to get into Safe Mode with Windows 8 from BIOS? Compared to Windows 7?
Well it's a fucking 12 step convoluted process. Getting into safe mode in windows 7 is by pressing F8. It's just the little things.
It offers no amazing advancements that Win 7 doesn't already have. The only thing I've seen that Windows 8 has on 7, is a little bit more intelligent in automatically handling multiple monitor support. But in other areas I feel it went backwards.
Anyway, it's not a COMPLETE failure like Vista or anything. It runs well enough, All it is, is Windows 7 with a few features added, and others fucked with. But lots of people myself included are skipping it. I deal with it enough with everyone I talk to everyday.
Oh and don't get me started about Fast Boot compatibility issues. We will be here all day

Windows 8 runs smoothly for the most part, except recently I've been having some issues with certain apps. But the setup is pretty fucking rediculous, it could use a few changes for sure.
I downloaded the start menu so that makes things a bit easier, but it's not the only issue.

Hmm I hadn't realized that about safe mode.... but I'll take that as another good sign, I haven't needed it yet!

Dude, make your own PC, if you absolutely must have a portable laptop with a battery that dies all the time, a tiny screen/keyboard then lenovo is one of the decent-er brands.

How are Lenovo's low end tablets? I saw an ad the other day for a $130 7" Lenovo tablet and I was wondering if they're any good. Obviously I wouldn't expect anything high performing for that price but is the build quality decent at least?

IBM used to make pro quality laptops etc (e.g. the Thinkpad line) but they sold off the division that did that IIRC. Lenovo essentially makes the type of equipment that IBM used to under the some of the same branding.

Shroomism said: If you want a convertible, these are the best http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/thinkpad/thinkpad-helix/ but no sense paying several hundred extra just for a "convertible" that has inferior hardware than other regular laptops. With a convertible, you WILL pay a higher premium than you would otherwise, for LESS powerful specs.
I've heard Lenovo was quite good, but they are mostly on the higher end of my budget which is something I was looking to avoid.
I wish the helix was a few hundred less expensive, it doesn't even have a Haswell so I don't see why it's so expensive. I guess because it is a convertible.
I'm still torn because I really want a convertible but I also want something with decent specs for a slightly lower price.

I don't know how to build a PC, and I'm pretty sure it would be more expensive AND it wouldn't be portable. I'm simply not looking for a stationary PC.
Side note: PC builders remind me of PC gamers in that any time you talk about buying a new computer they always come in and tell you the way they do it is superior (which is what PC gamers say about gaming literally every time I talk to them).

What I mean is this... you say gaming is a lower priority on your list, but it'd be nice, right?
You could build a PC to play the majority of recent games at high or maximum settings for $800 easily. Now, a $800 laptop on the other hand is barely gonna handle those same games at medium/low settings/lower resolution, and believe me that matters a lot.
Building a PC can take a couple hours of research/work though and if you don't like hands-on stuff and/or really need a mobile computer, lenovo is a good choice. For a laptop.
To each their own

It's not that I don't like hands-on things. I work, volunteer and have 18 credits worth of classes plus a teaching position so I'm simply not interested in building my own PC. Plus I don't even want a PC at all whatsoever, I want something portable.
Also tons of games don't come out for PCs until a very long time after they come out for consoles, and a gaming PC that could handle current/next gen console games would be more pricey than $800.

I am assuming she wants a laptop specifically for school and portability. You don't lug a desktop around to classes.
That said of course a desktop is always cheaper + greater components for your money.
Laptop you are paying more for portability. Smaller components.
Hybrids/convertibles I would avoid right now Joie. They are mostly a gimmick, and like I said you will end up paying MORE for something that has LESS power than a regular laptop around the same price. So it's not the best bang for your buck by any means at all.
The first Lenovo I linked will handle EVERYTHING you need it for, and should handle most games admirably. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312835
Just a little over your 1k budget, but I don't really think you can do better than that for that price. 8GB SSD is the kinda weakest point.. but it has a 1TB HDD. You could add a bigger SSD down the line if you wanted.

I bought a Dell for like 320 bucks from best buy and its probably the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned. I'd suggest not buying anything from those dicks, most of the computers they have are shit. Only reason I bought it was because I didn't feel like waiting a few days, and I regret it. I don't like touch screens for home computing, I would suggest against it personally.

Exactly, if I were just sitting at home with my computer I'd get a desktop PC or maybe be interested in building my own if I had the free time, which I don't anyway.
But convertibles are so cool!
The reason I'm really considering the touch screen/convertible option is because I want something super portable for in class but at the same time I want a higher powered laptop-esque computer for when I'm at home so I'm thinking a convertible could be the best of both worlds. However you're totally right about the cost of those, so I'm very torn.

I dunno, I mean the only way I can really justify spending over $1000 is if it's going to last me well over 3-4 years. How long do you think I could keep that one in good working condition for? 1 TB is probably way more than I'd ever need, so that might be going way above and beyond what I need.
But, then again, my boss did just tell me I'm getting a raise so...

Yeah, I'm avoiding Dell because I've heard many similar stories and every Dell I've ever used has been surpassed by virtually every other brand I've tried.

Eh I put $220 into a $480 prebuilt (total $700) almost a year ago and I run skyrim, bf3, etcetera on maxed settings/resolution smoothly. Considering I didn't even know what I was doing, I think you could do even better than I

As much as I feel laptops are overpriced and not so good, - laptops are so great for watching movies/tv episodes on while you're traveling or out of the home. anyway

My last high end laptop cost me 2k back in 2008, it is still going strong to this day (granted not top of the line anymore). But it was on 24/7 for 4 years. Used for heavy gaming. Traveled all around the country in a backpack. Still kicks ass
I'd be pissed if my laptops only lasted 2 years. Take care of them (clean out the dust REGULARLY, dont beat them the fuck up and they should last a long time. I've opened mine up completely two times to completely clean everything out.
It's never bad to have more HDD space than you need. It is bad to have not enough space and then need more. 1TB is not all that much these days anyway, not that hard to fill.

Higher capacity hard drives also have faster transfer speeds I believe so there's that. If I was in the market for a laptop I would want one that can take two drives so that I could have both a SSD and a HDD.
