Question regarding expansion of perlite
    #18771927 - 08/29/13 05:55 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Does adding water cause perlite to expand or baking it in oven, or both? Also is the expansion of perlite very significant or minimal?

Well, perlite expands at high temperatures... but unless your oven does like 1500F I don't think you need to worry. As for expanding with water; I didn't notice any significant change in anything but weight when rising and wetting mine.

Perlite is a rock. A rock will expand when heated but the amount is negligible. It does not expand when wet. It does not soak up water. It is only coated with water

Perlite is already expanded volcanic glass. It doesn't change it's shape or size in contact with water or heat.
