You ever hear people bitch about other people and it seems like they are subconsciously bitching about themselves?
For instance a very obvious selfish person who doesn't get their way saying how selfish someone is when they don't give them want they want..etc etc.
What is this?
And why?
And what happens when one realizes they are essentially talking about themselves?

pretty freudian idea, projection, the idea being that you're unconsciously rejecting your own unacceptable attributes by projecting them onto somebody else.
it's a defense mechanism to maintain one's own self image of being the good selfless guy

This makes sense..
Its an observation I've been noticing while having conversations with some close friends of mine, one in particular, who literally went off on a certain persons bad attributes and I couldn't help but giggle at the obviousness of what he was complaining about was all the things that he has wrong with himself..

Seriously though you didn't discover some great human secret, I noticed that when I was like 13 and then learned it was a theory. Anyway I'm just as guilty as everyone else that does it. you probably do it but don't recognise it

This is the classic biblical saying about what is now referred to as Projection in Psychoanalytical psychology as CJ noted: "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye," from Matthew 7:5. Projection is just one of several psychological defense mechanisms. There is also Projective I identification, which is something my ex-wife used to do with me. In that mechanism, you not only project your own stuff onto someone, but you then begin to react/respond to that person AS IF they really embody that projection.
