I finally started a new cacti garden.
    #18771419 - 08/29/13 12:27 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I have been living in So Cal for the last month and a half and after callousing them I finally planted half of them.
So I planted two Trichocereus Bridgesii in the larger pot together and then a Trichocereus Pachanoi foot tip in one smaller pot and a larger taller Pachanoi top in the other.

Their is a tip of bridgesii laying on the ground in the forefront because I am going to cut it in half and plant them laying down. Also their is two large mid section stalks of the pachanoi just standing and leaning behind my planted cacti.

They are all cuttings. The Bridgesii is tested potent so I'm going to baby and propagate it as much as possible.

O and each of them are planted 8 inches deep so roots can come from more areas. The Bridgesii have root bumps popping up in many places on the bottom halves of them.

You can never go wrong growing potent Trichocereus, as the world always needs more.

If you're not already aware. Be careful introducing those pachanois to the sun. Those tips have been starved of light, indicated by the light green/white colour. Leave them in the shade so they can "green up", then slowly introduce into stronger light. Might take a few weeks. Giving them full sun now will incinerate them.

I'm terrified of sunburning my cactus now. I already killed three and damaged several because of it

On topic, I'm jealous of your collection! I need to start collecting more mature Trichocereus.

I am not a fan of this, and imo is counter productive for a few reasons. First, I have noticed that once they begin to  shoot out roots, they mainly focus on extending roots from that spot. Next, the roots grow horizontally until they hit the side of the pot, then the grow down.  Compared to to most plants, cacti roots have a lot less propensity to grow up. Planting that low will only allow they roots to fill ~1/2 the available real estate. Lastly, this mostly is regarding the bridgesii, but planting that low may slightly increase the chances of rot. Being in so cal, that probably won't be an issue.

The roots where sprouting on the complete lower half of the cacti. I buried them to the top of this area.
