My hobby mushroom operation! (Pics!)
    #18770236 - 08/28/13 08:01 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Old hay storage building being cleaned out and roof repainted. How many normal mushroom logs do you think I could fit in here? I have a unlimited supply of normal 4-8" clean stuff from a neighboring 285 Acre property my sister owns.

Probably going to replace the light diffuser panels in the front with new clean white ones... Or maybe just spray the old ones with bleach to clean them up.

Fresh logs ready to be inoculated on the left. Well, not that fresh... Leaves were allowed to die on trees mostly before they were cut, and they will be plugged aged three weeks total from when the trees were originally cut and have around 40% moisture content! These will be Shiitake.

Some Pearl Oyster quad wafer stacks spawning away.

Pearl Oyster logs plugged in different ways.

Experimental end plugging/saran wrap to prevent end contamination. Notice thin halo of mycelium spreading around plugs around an inch out currently. Too time consuming to do this with scale, but still a interesting experiment.

Building airflow is controlled by how far the sides are dug down around the edges. Also, cedar boards are put in place to lower airflow and lessen evaporation currently... Humidity is low.

Woot... Gotta love cutting down trees!

Some of the alder that needs to go... Fir will replace it in these little valleys.

Some oyster pins on my old shotty logs from the winter before last. The plugs that went into this log were sold to me as "Blue Oyster Mushroom Plugs" from the Thyme Garden... I am kind of skeptical they are actually blue oyster... Don't see any blue even on the pins!

A simple mobile log plugging rig. Logs go from left to right. Low back strain... You stand inside the rig and the log sits inside the big V's when drilling. No need to lean forward and strain for the other end or anything. Soft pine runners on top of treated wood keep logs clean and prevent bark damage.

Very cool project.  I wish I had the building and the humidity.

Best of luck to you.

Nice, I wish I had the space to do something like that!

It kinda looks like I live in a rainforest doesn't it... LoL! Last couple summers have been bone dry though. Three months without a drop of rain last year, and this year more than a couple months of dry heavy wind. Soil was dust a half foot down even in the shade until recently.

Looks like a great start!  I'll be eager to see how you fit this space out.

One curiosity, though.  I see a lot of moss.  The first thing I do after getting a log in is to scrape of the moss and pressure wash off the dirt, lichen, etc. I think this keeps the bark healthy for a longer time, and gives your spawn a bit less competition for the log.

The only problems moss and lichen present are keeping log surfaces wet and getting your mushrooms dirty.

Also, it tends to go inactive/die off if you keep your log surfaces dry. It took two summers before moss managed to start to slightly grow onto the ends of those old logs kept outdoors. Not exactly a key competitor... The Oyster logs that are colonizing properly never got any moss on the ends.

That reminds me... I need to go check and see if this wild Oyster log I found is fruiting again. It's completely moss covered and has great flushes!

My new 4-8" logs will be coming from young moss/litchen free south slope alders. Ill get a pressure washer anyway at some point though.

Ya, Oysters love everything.  Fruiting Oysters is like breeding rabbits -- you can take credit for the successes, but you can't really fail. But log longevity may be decreased by moss. Judging from what I see in the wild, moss covered logs have fewer flushes than clean-barked logs. The bark falls off and the oyster is kaput.

I think that shiitake production suffers from moss.  The holes moss drills into the bark become pathways for contamination, which leads to bark failure.

^^ Interesting information on moss.  I wonder if some species benefit?  I don't think I've ever found wild g. tsugae growing on wood that DIDN'T have moss.

Moss helps keep moisture in and limits evaporation, so in certain climates it probably improves some wild mushroom production. It is a  annoyance for those who soak their logs and want the surfaces to dry out fast to limit contamination risk though.

I plan for my logs to not require more than a single soak during spawn run ever, and try to dry the bark surface back out within a few hours. Might need a fan...

I long ago gave up trying to get water into logs by wetting the bark.  Place water on both ends of the log and the log will water itself.

Yep, it's been documented that all of the thin barked species don't absorb water easily except through the end grains. (Alder, Poplar, Willow, Etc...)

The bark of these species is like a waterproof barrier... (Almost!) That is the only reason a lot of them are labeled "medium suitability"... They can't be sprinkled like oak and some maple can be.

If your taking notes... My solution to making Red Alder logs much easier to keep at optimal moisture without a ridiculous amount of physical labor is to simply keep it indoors with around 85% humidity and very low airflow without being "stagnant".

At the rate of moisture loss I'm recording... *Checks data...*
8" Alder Log - Red Ribbon
Starting Weight - 39LB - 50% Moisture (Dry Weight: 19.5Lb)
Target: 33.5Lb (42% Moisture)
Low Moisture: 30Lb (35% Moisture)
Last Recorded Weight: 38Lb

One pound per month for a 39Lb log at around 60-70% humidity and daily high temps around 75F... That would put the log underweight and dropping to 35% moisture eight months from now. However, winter is coming and higher natural humidity, in addition I will have running water soon to wet down the building floor to bump humidity up to where I need it. Evaporation rates will also drop as logs lose moisture.

Once everything is fixed up and worked on... I will be starting my spawn runs around 45% log moisture and hope to be able to get the entire spawn run done without dropping below 36% moisture so... An entire spawn run with no soaking!
