Panaeolus cinctulus grow
    #18761114 - 08/26/13 07:38 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey folks

I'm currently incubating some wild-harvested Panaeolus subbalteatus mycelium on sterilized rye grass seed. I have 2 large quart jars about 3/4 full that are almost complete. I also have 2 pint jars 3/4 full that are almost complete.

I'm thinking of casing everything but one qt jar. Then I'm going to spawn the saved quart jar to sterilized substrate in 4 quart jars.

I'm thinking about using part rye grass seed and part compost as a substrate. Also possibly some vermiculite. I'm hoping to get some thick ones if I use a more nutrient-rich substrate than rye grass seed only. I am aware though that meatyness is a genetic trait. Anyways, if ya'll are real nice I'll post a log when I'm done, from harvest to harvest. Mycotopia recently kicked me out...not sure why.

SO anyways, my question is: What should my substrate be? Anyone with experience in this limited field?

What I'm hoping for:

and what I'm expecting...

If they follow the same trend as cubensis, they will grow fatter on straw, dung or compost. Excellent time for a side-by-side comparison.

What he said! A varable mixture of straw, horse poo or manure and rye (or millet) should be ideal ;-)

Thanks everyone. I live in an apartment so manure is a bit out of my league. Maybe compost, rye grass seed and straw?

This rye grass seed really finishes up quickly!

Some experimentation is certainly in order.

Also I think I forgot to mention that the thick ones in the first picture were picked from compost.

Thanks again

Why would manure be out of your league?  I imagine your thinking that when your pasteurizing it will make you apartment stink of poo.

You have nothing to worry about though.  Properly aged manure will not smell anything like poo it will just give of a pleasant earthy smell.  It will not smell of poo at all if it does its not aged enough.

Even after pasteurization while colonizing the only smell that you should be getting is an earth smell to begin with and then a nice mushroomy smell when colonized.  Anything else your probably facing contamination.

I'm not an expert on actives, but "meatyness" is sometimes more a factor of environment (ie; CO2 level) rather than genetics.  Longer, thinner stems and smaller caps are often a result of higher CO2 levels (less airflow) for many species.  Again, it could be different with this species, I don't know much about it.

Also, rye grass seed should be a pretty nutritious substrate.  That's why it's usually used as a spawn instead of a substrate.  As a substrate, I'd say it's about as nutritious as you're going to want/be able to get.  I mean it should be right on par with other grains, yes?  Can't see any benefit to using anything more nutritious as a substrate.

You could try fruiting from the grain as rgsr is about as nutritious as it gets.  look up violets teks.
