Mini monotub help, garbage bag/side pinning.
    #18770050 - 08/28/13 07:26 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Okay guys this is probably going to be the stupidest question you've ever read.

I have considered NOT doing mono tubs simply because the idea of making the perfect cut out of a bag to put on the bottom/sides of the monotub to reduce side pinning sounds too hard.

Can somebody give me advice on how to do this or offer me an alternative method for preventing side pinning?

Cut the bag open, cut along 2 seems.

Line the entire inside of the tub.

Dump in and mix the spawn/substrate.

Level it out.

Cut the excess plastic 1/2" above the substrate, along the entire perimeter with sharp scissors.

Done.

 Please explain to me what foil is going to do?

Because it is certainly not going to stop side pins.

Mycellium will eat thru foil anyways.

I like to flip the tub upside down, then wrap the bag around the bottom like I was wrapping a present. Tape the ends and cut off the excess. Pull the liner off the bottom, turn the tub over and place it inside. The liner should hold the shape well enough to settle perfectly into place and already trimmed to size

I use an X-acto knife.  Insert the liner, fill it up with sub and spawn and mix it all up really well, and when you're done just put a small amount of tension on the bag while zipping around the inside of tub just above the level of the substrate with the X-acto.  A very light pressure will do, and it takes maybe thirty seconds if you do it right and take your time.

Take prepped substrate and mix spawn all in a bucket

Open the small trash bag and put it into the container.

Pour substrate mix into each container.

Pull on the trash bag to ensure it's not folded underneath, shake the tub around and make sure the substrate is level across.

Take lighter and burn the trash bag. All you have to do is pull the trash bag a little taught and barely touch the fire at all. It gets easier as you get better at it, believe me. And once you're practiced it's like taking candy from a baby.

Using the fire from the lighter to burn/cut the trashbag beats the hell out of cutting the trash bag with like scissors or a knife IME.
