My College reminds me of Highscool

I'm 26 and going back to school to get a certification in HVAC. My classes are filled with what seems yo be 16 year olds..I feel dirty even looking at the girls sitting around me. Have I really aged this much since highschool? I'm having a quarter-life crisis here!! Could be because its a community college and my last experience was at a university?

Most of the people there are probably 18-19, some even 17. That's pretty friggin' young.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but I'm curious how long it takes to get certified in HVAC? A year?

18 months for certification. Two and a half years for associates in applied science.

Damn I'm only taking math 22 which is algebra/trig and struggling, props on taking calculus. I have to take a 100 level math class eventually to get my degree. I think there is a statistics class that will be easier than calc.

most vocational schools allow people in high school to dual enroll. It wouldn't be a surprise if you actually have high school kids in there.

Haha disregard the crisis. Focus on your studies!
Yes, most of them will be really young. There will be other people your age, some a bit older, and on a rare occasion, a few older than you (although most people seeking education at that age will be doing so in a University).
If you're looking for friends, there's nothing wrong with an age gap. Just keep in mind that most of them won't even be able to comprehend you as a close friend; neither will you be able to. 5-10 years is a big difference. At this point, most of us are technologically driven, and a lot happens in 5 years for technology. Don't take it personally, it's just the way it is.
If you're looking for a 'mate'... honestly, forget it. You can probably get a few girls to fuck you because they like older guys, but other than that, I wouldn't get your hopes up.
I know you didn't even reference either of the last 2 paragraphs.. I just threw them out there since you seem to care about who is in your classes. However, I will refer to my initial point: focus on your studies!
Leave (most of) your socializing outside of school.
Of course, this is all simply my opinion. Do what you will, but I hope you take something from this!

Great advice thanks. I didn't focus on my studies at the University I went to when I was 18. Ended up flunking out after 2 years. This time I'm here just for the studies! I have the love of my life so definetly not looking for a mate. What did you major in?

What is this supposed to mean? Are you suggesting that you can't keep up on technology with people 5 years younger? That's just silly and completely untrue.
The truth is that 5 years in your late teens and early 20s can be the difference from being in high school to managing a company. The maturity gap is huge, it makes complete sense that you would view them as being young.
Once you hit your mid-late 20s or so 5 years means a lot less, but before then it's a world of difference.

Hey thanks for putting words in my mouth when you don't know what I mean, instead of asking.
I'm referring to how much what you view on the internet affects you. My sister and some people I work with are prime examples of it. They're random for the sake of being random, and 'different', without actually achieving what they set out for, while believing they do. They're being fed a different set of media than 5 years ago, lapping up a different set of trends than was being spewed 5 years ago.
I agree with your maturity gap, but like everything involving people, it depends on the person.

I don't think that has much to do with the internet. They just sound young. I did random stupid shit when I was 13-14 too.

Yeah, random stupid shit. Not shit fed to them to make them think it's random stupid shit. I work with an 18 year old girl who reminds me of my 15 year old sister (just turned 15) in every. single. way. They react to things similarly, like the same shit, think the same way, reject the same things, yet each considers themselves an individual. Guess what? Neither of them watch more than a few hours of TV a day, yet spend all their time on the internet. I wonder what influences their actions?
I don't blame internet as the culprit (ok I did before, but after thinking about it more), but any media source. I guess it's human nature to ascribe to a particular one, whether it be internet games and shows made for teenagers or forums, or whatever else it may be.
So you're definitely right about the maturity factor. I'm sorry if I took away from that before, that was wrong of me. But the internet is definitely another factor in this.

I think we will see a MUCH bigger impact of the internet on the generation of kids who are 6-7 now. They have had high-speed internet, tablets, and smartphones their entire lives. I'm interested to see if they're much different.

I understand. The general vibes at my university today sucked. Everyone walking around still clutching to their high-school swag. Fuck, its annoying. Being in an environment surrounded by people who (I admit, only from looks and the over-hearing of conversations) seem to be 100 % absorbed in their looks and and personas, certainly doesn't help facilitate a mindset needed to do well in school. I now remember why I couldn't stand college when I first started.
And to make it worse, as a result of the immature attitudes of the students (some, not all) professors seem to view their classes as a whole as one giant fuck-up.
I do much better when the relationship the teacher has with the class is such that, from the students' point of view, it seems as if the teacher doesn't degrade you at all. When a teacher makes it seems as if the students are just as much of an adult as (s)he, then it works out real well. For both parties would realize that one of them is trying to share knowledge while the other is perfectly capable of receiving it.
...But shit, when a professor has to tell you a story from the semester before of a student looking at porn during class (and thus go on to lecture about proper lap-top use), you--as a student--feel 'below' the level of 'adulthood' then the professor. And the transfer of knowledge doesn't work so well because its as if the professor has to spin his lessons in a way that works with immature fools.

Just because they don't watch TV or go on the internet doesn't mean their peers don't. And they are influences by their peers

I think you're right about that. Hopefully they're more open minded and willing to research things for themselves.
Although I don't think our educational system will adapt quickly enough, and this generation won't put as much stock in information verification as is necessary with such an information overload. Then there's restrictions (which I think should be assigned by the parents [and not to mention the many parents who don't know how to effectively parent]).
We may die off in just enough time to not see humanity destroy itself hahahaha
Hey Mule, think how the Professor will feel when they find out that their class isn't solely comprised of careless students going through the motions? Ask questions, be involved.. it will give your Professor a reason to be motivated.
Put yourself in their shoes. Dealing with countless students who are taking the class because they have to, whether for a graduation requirement or because their parents are forcing them (or any other number of reasons). Someone who, in the beginning, wanted to educate likeminded individuals and was dealt a harsh realistic blow. One motivated student may be enough to make their semester, as well as yours!
Magicman: how much do their peers affect them? How do they group themselves? I know in HS, I hung out with people who had similar interests to me. At least in my own high school, it was the same. Even through college. Yes, peers are influential - but only the ones who matter to the individual.
