How important is this ACTUALLY...

How important is it to insure that a casing layer is above a ph of 7? using a 50/50 peat verm casing layer on a bulk straw/poo mixture, does it matter that much how high the PH is? This has always confused me...and since i have to either case it today or suffer overlay...and the only oyster shell comes in a 25 lbs bag that i would have to lug across town...I am wondering if it is really worth it! thanks alot guys.

you should probably use a ph buffer since your using peat....unless you bought premixed peat/vermic with the ph already adjusted

I've done many a casing without adjusting the pH for Peat/verm. Though when added the casing seems to resist contams much better. Try getting some Hoffman's Horticulture Hydrated Lime, they come in sacks like sugar.

is a ph of 7 acceptable? or does it have to be 7.5?

7 is acceptable, 7.5 is good too. Anything roughly around 7 will do actually.

7 is fine but go for a little higher. 7.1-7.5...

i don't fool with peat because of the acidity.

it's pretty important to adjust the pH when using peat. if you don't, it'll be too acidic, making it prone to contams and poor for mushroom growth, especially multiple flushes. adjusting the pH doesn't have to be real technical. if you're not using peat, it's not even necessary, but a little oyster shell (the proportions need not be anything precise) will work well as a buffer.

i make my casings with coir, verm, and oyster shell. (10:10:1).

i've made them before with just coir and oyster shell before too and they worked well. those were 10:1 coir to oyster shell. you can buy enough coir and oyster shell at the pet store to make many casings for less than $10.

How do you measure the coir to the verm? I just eyeball it usually. Is the ratio that important.

i just eyeball it. it's not really important. i use less verm when it's the finer stuff than i would if it was chunky.
