Meripilus sumstinei sounds better to me, although that's still technically edible if you don't mind chewing leather.  Did it blacken at all with age?  The reaction can be pretty slow.

I noticed parts of it were blackened I cut them off. It seemed that it wasnt very leathery except the stem parts. It smelled really good and mushroomy. I will look up the info you provided TY

I think you may be right that its the blackened polypor. I havent seen any lavender which is common on hen of the woods. maybe this is a rooster of the woods.

Oh, crap, thought a ti had verified this.

Be a shame if they weren't.

That's a meripilus species alright. Certainly not grifola frondosa.

I knew that sketch put a lot of effort into prepping these for the table, hence the regrets, but apparently no need for that.

thanx fry day  Im not mad or anything. I appreciate all of the help. I figured just in case it was a good edible I would prepare it up like we had talked about before. I dont regret cleaning the mushrooms. was a lot of work but I had nothing else to do lol. TY again for your time. I will eventually find a hen of the woods hopefully this fall. I may try a piece of this even if its a black staining polypor. they say its like chewing on leather. but its still edible. Im not starving so I will be alright just preserving the mushrooms we think are safe to possibly eat.

Maybe if it was cooked at a higher heat less time, it would stay tender. Did a TI ever identify it? If it is edible, and you try it, let us know what it taste like.

Hens are great tasting, I found a big one last year when I was hunting, but never grabbed it. They seem to like the cooler weather.

Have you hunted for chantrelles? They are quite tasty too.

TY NGH  I didnt try any yet. I believe it was IDed as a black staining polypor for the most part but I dont know for sure. Mixed replies has me uncertain. Maybe Im not reading it right. Both are considered edible so I will try some of the ones I sauteed and froze sometime next week. I will report back;) Im thinking like u said and others said the hens like colder weather so its more then likely a black staining. I have found a bunch of smooth chanterelles this year but didnt eat any of them:( I will try some next time I find them prolly next year because I havent seen any more, I heard they are quite good too. I ate chicken of the woods and giant puffball and enjoyed them;)
