Porcini (or boletes) don't have gills
Just guessing.... Looks like a Coprinus sp. or a young Pluteus sp. maybe

And they don't grow on trees or wood, and are considerably bigger.

Porcini do not grow off of wood...
Did you take the edible parts of the hen of the woods? It's considered medicinal. I haven't seen any, but guess the best practice is to trim off the tender parts and leave the rest to regen...
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

Naw, I was just thinkin' that is a shit load of fungus if it's all usable. ;-) What a score to come across it when it's prime. I seem to stumble upon stuff just a day or two late. Have you tried it yet? Drying? Freezing?

Maybe dry half and freeze half? That takes the pressure off of space to dry a bit and gets half of it out of your hair quickly. If you had a foodsaver/sealameal that'd be awesome. Just regular old baggies don't give much freezer protection. I wonder if anyone's used freezer paper like the butcher does.
Try them and let us know!
Oh - you'll want to saute them maybe a bit lightly before you freeze. If you don't cook them too hard then when you add more heat to prepare they won't be overcooked. I'd say be generous with your oil/butter. If you had a crapload of onions/garlic/herbs to dispose of might be good to throw in seasonings...

Are they near any buildings that could have been used for some enterprise? I would haul some home, use it to boost your laundry detergent. I love using found stuff.
On the maitake - if you haven't got frig room then cool and dark is probably best.

I am not seeing Hen of the woods, something doesn't look right. I am not familiar with Ohio's temps right now, but I would figure it is to warm still.
This just doesn't look like any Hens I have found, almost look more like chickens.
Maybe Berkeley's Polypore, or Meripilus sumstinei? I am guessing here, and would make sure prior to eating. Any pics of them in the ground?
