Need some suggestions for good history books.
    #18769151 - 08/28/13 04:22 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I recently found out that I'm incredibly interested in learning more about history. It kind of sucks, because I just barely coasted by in school when it came to history.

I'm not sure exactly which topic I want to read about yet, so I'd like to find a book that goes over ancient history starting at the beginning of written history (please don't recommend the bible. I've already read this book, and still not sure how I feel about it). Obviously a lot of shit happened in the beginning, and I don't need a book that goes crazy into detail about every event. I just wanna read about each of the events and see what exactly interests me, so I can dive into that subtopic further.

If you guys have any good suggestions please let me know! If the book has an ebook version, that's a huge plus  Or if you want, suggest some historical topics that interest you, maybe they'll interest me too!

I have well over one hundred. I major in history. They're all interesting. Literally every single history book I've read has been awesome.

This one stood out as very interesting and a comfortable read.

Thanks for that! As a history major, do you think it's better to start with modern history and work your way backwards? I can see it being easier to start with modern history, as it's probably more well documented and easier to understand.

I haven't found much of a preference. In terms of Asian history I started large scale and then got progressively more tight in my focus. With Africa I did the opposite. I started with the highest level African chorus and worked my way back. It's all interconnected so it fits either way I think.

As for time, I don't think it matters at all. As I see it, you can understand modern history just fine studying just modern history. You don't need to read about the American revolution to understand the interwar period of the United States. It will help you understand if you read about all the periods leading up, but you can really start anywhere with history.
