win98 clean install help
    #1874925 - 09/02/03 04:47 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

hi,
my dad picked up and old computer with no hard drive. 256mb ram, pentium 166
anyway, i whacked a brand new maxtor 40gb hd in, jumpers set to master.

BIOS recognizes the hard drive and all seems to be ok. however, when i boot from the boot disk and switch to the cd drive, and run setup it runs and then i get the error:

scanning system registry
windows setup requires 73400

and i cannot do anything after this.

i used pc's at win95 but i've been using a mac ever since, so i'm not very clued up on it these days.
i've searched on the net but nothing has come up,any help would be great.

cheers, mike

can you boot the windows 98 cdrom?

if that doesn't work, try a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

My first guess would be a conflict with an older bios and a large harddrive. Check the date on your bios and update it to the latest and see if your problem goes away.

I thought it was win95 that had the 2gig limitation? If it's the bios it may not even have a newer one for something that old.
Perhaps some disk management software?

Anyway, if that's the problem spend a few bucks and do this......
Board and CPU $89.99

And

Case. $29.99

Strip the rest of the stuff from your old case. Make sure your ram is compatible though.

Donno about that... I never played with w95 much.

Bios interrupt 13h is used to access the disk during boot.  The interrupt can only address 1024 cylinders, 63 sectors, and 256 heads.  Each sector is 512 bytes, therefore using bios 13h you can only address (1024*256*63*512) bytes which is 8G.  This is why your boot code (usually a partition) must be completly located within the first 8G of any disk.

The interrupt was designed in the early days of the PC and nobody would ever come close to addressing that much disk space.  (The original XT interrupt could only address 16 heads resulting in a 528MB limit.)

When the bigger drives came out, they needed a way to address more space.  The answer was to translate the physical disk geometry (cylinders, sectors, and heads) into a virtual geometry for bios.  The disk may only have two heads, but it will pretend that it has 256 heads and translate the address as needed.

To get above the 8GB limit, the OS has to provide it's own drivers and perform it's own translation routines.  Gotta love backwards compatibility... I cannot install an OS anywhere that I want on my harddrive, but I can still run dos 1.1 on my 2GHz P6 if I want!    :nut:
