Does one need to sterilize perlite even if it does not directly touch the substrate?

If you have had a contamed grow you can sterilize it to feel safer, but else you don't need really
I guess a contamed grow could drop lots of mold spores onto the perlite when you fan, so putting the perlite in the oven (and washing the SGFC with bleach) wouldn't hurt , wouldn't damage the perlite
same with verm, you can sterilize that in the oven too at very high temps
if you grow from new you don't need to wash the SGFC, or the perlite see mushroomvideos.com how to do it, just rinse under water, then its ready to use
the verm you roll your ckaes in after drunk doesn't need sterilizing either, but it doesn't hurt and the water you dunk in doesn't need to be sterile, tap water is fine
.. the reason is of course that fully colonized cakes are very contam resistant....

I was considering removing the perlite from my SGFC, baking and then rehydrating as it's been sat there for what like 3 months maybe...I've been putting it off as it's actually quite an annoying job. Would it be better then to just remove cakes and give it a spray down with some bleach???

yes i think bleach works better than ehat treatment, less work bro.
Now if your trying to get rid of perlite, then you can add salt water, look for salt water pools and see why it works.
Also if you have the time to mist a lot, no water or perlite is needed. Scrub/sponges are also an alternative.

C'mon guys perlite is cheap as hell! It's just money Once every month or 2 dump it and replace.
Or better yet once your perlite gets funky throw out your whole sgfc and make a monotub

Boil it between grows and it will last forever.
It's a rock.
Or, as said above, if you're made of money, fuck it....throw that perfectly fine perlite out ever 2 months and replace it with new, because of your severe but understandable OCD.

Never even thought of sterilizing perlite. Never did that. Never needed to. You can re-use it as is. If you have a contam issue just use it for a garden project and get new perlite. You can also use a solution of H2O2 and water 2% of 3% H202 which is a solution of 0.0006% H202 to keep it from going funky. It shouldn't go funky if there is enough air exchange. Anyway there is no reason to sterilize it.

Thnx! So if one boils it should one still use H202 as well?

from what I understood don't worry to much about it or if there is a funk or contamination problem boil it or h2o2 bath it I would boil to sterilize my self boil it long enough it will kill anything you might have a problem with.
