Is it cold enough to grow mushrooms yet?
    #18766751 - 08/28/13 12:20 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I was exploring the Labyrinth last night and I saw a post saying that if your growing in a large bag and the air temperature is 60 degrees it could be 85 degrees at the core of the bag?  If this is true how do you know you have a large bag?

Bags will not grow at 75-80 degrees because its too hot?

Not true at all, for tropical species anyways.

What species are you referring to?

I am talking cubensis my good sir

But what I am trying to say is if the air temp is 75-80 it could be 100-105 in the bag

No way.

I cannot even see a monotub putting out that much heat.

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

not a tub a bag

RR was saying that large bags need to be at 60 because it is hotter inside and would be 85 at the core if at 60

err I notice now you included bags

RR said 60...

I have worked with compost before and it gets really hot to the core
I always thought it was the bugs and bacteria but maybe fungus too?

perhaps its greenhousing?

Got a link?

Because i doubt he said that.

The info above is accurate for cubes.

My monotubs and jars colonize and fruit fine at 80F.

I doubt a spawn bag puts out more heat than a tub.

i doubt it too but perhaps if one is using colonies of a gallon or more. I have seen video of farmers grow with what appear to be 12 lb bags.

in cases like this I think RR may be correct because 1 RR said it

and 2 unsterilized compost produces heat
