Home made Mushroom dehydrator tek

I have used this with much success. Due to the fact it more reliable than the cheap dehydrator that you can buy say like at walmart or whatever. This what you need.
!1! A iron that right like you would use to Iron your clothes with.! !2! A 5 gal bucket with lid.! !3! A computer fan or a small fan any kind as long as it not to big.! !4! A BRICK! !5! Two wire nuts! !6! Electrical Tape !7! Wooden dowels Okay first take a part your Iron. Make sure to remove all plastic. So that you pretty much have just the bottom of the iron called the element plate. Make sure to keep all controls that are use to cut it on and adjust settings for heat. Now thats done . Take your bucket clean it with soap and water then dry. Place your brick in the bottom. As the is will be your fire plate. You could also use a fireproof insulation foam. Then place your iron plate on top of the brick. Now you can use a clothes hanger to wrap around the plate to make it stationary. Now drill small holes to run the wires to the outside for your power switch and temp settings. You will have to cut your wires to do this so use the wire nuts to reconnect your wire then wrap with tape. Now strap your controls in place where you would like them to be. Your all most done. Now you need to make your racks to be your trays. I have use wooden dowels and i have used wire hangers. Since you can heat the wire up onthe end till its red and push through the bucket. Once you have made you rack system . Its time to move on to the lid of the bucket cut a hole a lil smaller than your fan. Then attach your fan making sure that It pulling the air through the bucket and out. And Thats It
I like this style since you can finely adjust your temps as low as you want. Works perfect you can also install a small light bulb on the lid on the inside of the bucket. For light so enjoy Most hobbies and normal holmes will already have most of the materials to do this tek. If not mostly every thing can be bought at a family dollar or dollar general for under 30 bucks. The main thing is this wont tear up in a month. Will work for years.

Thats true. I have bought several of those twenty dollar deals. And some only work a week or two. and they only come with like 4 TRAYS . With this you have room for 6 to 8 shelves. And this last for ever. No-more trips to the store cause damn 20 dollar dehydrator quit set it forget its that dependable. You can fine tune your heat settings to anything up to 200 degree's. Bet 20 Can`t do that with that 20 dollar deal. Plus if you are using this out in a shop during the winter. You can just turn your dial to up to say 70- 80 degree's. And its just like normal drying with a fan at room temp. If thats what you want. The cheap dehydrators lie don`t always register stable temps either. They will if you wanna spend A 100 or above on one.

I'd worry about fire hazards with this tek. So be super careful if you try anything like it. Since you are taking apart an Iron and using the heating element.
What is wrong with making a pre-drying rack with a fan and then buying a high quality dehydrator with trays? The high quality dehydrators with trays have adjustable temperatures and can fit a lot each especially if they are fan dried for 2 days without any heat. The results are consistent and the high end dehydrators with 9 -11 trays lose little value over time and don't break down.

I can see your point. But this isn`t a fire hazard if you follow the tek. Thats why you secure The Heating Element which is a bottom plate off a iron. To a two inch thick brick. There is no fire haz there. Unless your going to be constantly woving it around. With Pro Dehydrators their stationary you won`t be moving it all the time either. But anyway the brick absorbs all the heat from the element and wont melt the bucket or catch anything on fire. Im just saying If you have the money in this day economy to buy a 215 dollar Dehydrator go for it. But this does the same thing for 30. And most the materials you already have may cost you 5 dollars for a Iron.

Plus i have worked for a company that builds commercial and residential stoves and grils and such for 7 yr untill laid off so i do know what im talking about. A dehydrator is built in a style just like a electric smoker or stove. under your elements there is a thin layer or light metal for cosmetics and under that there is ceramic porse brick and sometimes their is just fireproof insulation. On these 20 dollar dehydrators there is just usually a element coming from on side at the base plate with nothing under it for protection by plastic its self. I rest my case if you run on as i run min they will melt search on google you will see that the cheap ones can melt there trays and catch fire. lol

What?
Sounds like you should actually try using one of these "20 dollar dehydrators."
They work great and come with a warranty too.

I already have one bought for fourty its a : The Food Dehydrator by Mr Coffee Model FD5 0496. And a CROFTON FOOD DEHYDRATOR MODEL 6041-11 that i payed I think 29.00 for. Both of them have quit working. And the Crofton did melt the first two trays when it decided to tear up a week after I bought it . But im not here to try to build these things to sell. I just posted it to help. And there reliable.

I would demand a refund, goddamn.
I guess I use $40 dehydrators, nesco brand, they last for thousands of hours and don't melt trays.
I'd spend the extra $10 before messing with the risk of making my own.
Perhaps you know more about electrical stuff than myself and others do, but I don't trust my abilities with a heat element...not if I want to leave it on all night

Yeah I did try to get a refund. LOL without much luck lol. And I feel ya about the electrical. And i do have a electrical license. But if anyone feels skid dish about the Iron element. Could always just put one of those single eye electric hot plates in the bottom instead and drill ya a hole to run the power cord out without having to any electrical work or taking anything a part. Just make sure to silicone around the hole after you put the cord through.

While I cannot say I've ever built a stove or dehydrator, I am pretty proficient with electronics and enjoy tinkering...
That said why in the fuck someone would spend their time and 30+ bucks to build this escapes me... All in all this contraption seems like a big hassle, and would look hideous sitting in your kitchen (whereas my Nesco fd80 looks fucking awesome)
Aside from looks, your also loosing the ability to add and remove trays as well as quite likely having an extreme drop in electrical efficiency and the ability to dry your shrooms in a decent amount of time. (Not to mention the fire hazards as mentioned above.... because yep, that's right... plastic will melt and burn)
I've used dehydrators in my kitchen for years and on a weekly basis, from making deer jersey to drying my hot peppers and everything in between. To date I haven't had one go out on me yet, however I have upgraded a couple of times (now using a under 60 dollar fd80 that has tons of room and is quiet) but my old dehydrators are still being used in family members kitchens.
I can't see lugging this thing around, or putting it on the counter next to my toaster as a viable option.

well to tell you the truth i just built it for fun, with everyday items that i had at home. And I built me a nice one with the capability to hold up to 15 trays with the same concept with three elements and a old small freezer chest that I keep in my house. In my kitchen. And I didnt`t pay for any supplies to build it cause I already had everything. The reason for this posting is that most people already have all the things they would need to build one already. Not everyone has there dehydrator sitting in there kitchen filled with mushrooms. For their kids to get a hold of or some of there friends might come over and gets some or for what ever reason being. Most kinda want to keep there hobby to them self and post on here about it. And if you have the parts and a lil time you can make one like i said with a bucket and make it look like nice. But most would keep it in a shop, hobby room or a closet. And their probably the only one thats going to see it. You know what I mean. Sometime cash runs low and you have to make do with what you`ve got lol You could build this with several diffrent things as a enclosure instead of a bucket. And i still use my bucket dehydrator in my shop

And buy the way mostly all of the stackable and 20 buck dehydrators are made of plastic that you buy. And its very easy to put removeable trays in. you could easily cut the bucket and put a door on it with hindges. That all up to you and what you have avalible.
