favorite jar preparation?
    #18765947 - 08/27/13 09:08 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Up until my recent string of contams ive been poking 4 holes in metal lids and covering with micropore tape. i'm just curious what is everyones preferred way of obtaining GE in WBS jars. I bought a paint suit (not tyvek brand) but is says it protects down to .3 microns, which is the same as tyvek, but some members have said they have had poor results with off brand tyvek. any comments? Also, I have no way of getting sythetic filter discs right now as i dont have much money being a broke ass college kid lol :undecided: soooo... discuss!

Oh, also, I have plastic lids now which should be easier to drill holes in and such compared to metal lids

You can find EZ felt (stiffened) at craft stores like Micheals. Its really cheap and I've had great results with it, I just silicone 2 layers of it to the lid

:whathesaid:

A 1 dollar sheet of ez felt will provide a shit ton of lid filters (maybe 50 of the double layer ones?  Idk I've never counted, but a lot...)

Indeed, EZ felt is pretty fantastic.

I use it when I need a non-standard lid for whatever reason.

Disc of EZ felt under the lid, put the ring on, bam. GE.

For a modified PF tek lid, you should consider following citric's tek using tyvek or ez felt.

I think I might be the last person who still likes polyfill.  In all honesty I really fucking hate messing around with RTV hi-temp silicone.  It's a wonderful, wonderful material that is a massive pain in my ass and I've only used it on the lids of two of my jars for sterile injection ports.

What problems do you have with RTV?

Polyfill lids are great for easy grain lids.

well if ez felt is really that cheap and works i guess ill have to try it out! now frank, are you suggesting only one layer of the felt? or double it up like mush said? ill most likely end up putting on little squares like in the tek since i have rtv tubes hanging around my house and just to be thorough the GE hole should be .25 inch correct?

I only ever used one layer.

Tightly stuffed polyfill will work great too, might save you a trip to the store if you have it on hand

You're not weird, it sounds like you might be thinking of loose polyfill.

You want to take a wad, make it as tight as you can, and force that shit through there so it is stuck fast.

You want it to be so tight that you feel the resistance when you press your needle through.

You can test this with a spare needle while you are trying to get it right.

Make a 1/2" hole and stuff it super-fucking-tight

What problems do you have with RTV?

So I put ports on two of my jars, because I figured that was all I was ever going to need.  It went well, and I think I was right.  But then when I started helping a friend out I had to put ports on all of his jars, because I was like, "Don't buy spores, I've got you covered," and he was all like, "Nah, dude, I'm buying like ten syringes," and I'm like, "Dude, that's more spores than I could ever use in my lifetime," and he's like, "DO IT UP, BRO!" and I'm like, "Fine.  If you want to inject every one of these with MS I'll bring over my RTV and we'll set you up."

But the RTV silicone had dried, forming this crust that was half inside, half outside of the little nozzle.  We ended up pulling off the outside part, and then using first a meat thermometer, then a little pick to push the inside chunk farther in, but it was a process that had to be repeated like five times because we'd squeeze the tube and for some reason it would race right back to the nozzle and clog the damn thing up again.  So now we have a meat thermometer covered in RTV, a pick covered in RTV, my hands are covered in RTV from wiping the RTV off the goddamn pick so I could ram it in there again, and then I didn't want my beer to get warm so I washed my hands before taking a sip but it didn't matter and now the beer glass has RTV on it, so I wash my hands again and then take another sip but the goddamn RTV wiped off from the beer glass to my hands again.  And then my friend pointed out that there was a tiny spot where the RTV had pulled away from the metal and you could see light getting though, so I had to fix that, and when I picked up the jar it got RTV all over the outside of it and I yelled.

I mean, really it's a fantastic material and it's irreplaceable, but I guess I don't have the knack with it the rest of you guys do.

Um..I have been drinking now and I don't entirely follow you, but that's not your fault

Let me say though, it sounds like you used too little silicone.

I had the same problem, it would push through very easily/come off.

Use a LOT. Use twice as much as you think you would need.

These lids (with the SHIP) have 1/8" holes for the inoc port but the silicone circle is the size of a nickel and comes up 1/8" off the lid at its peak.

I recommend having at least that much on both sides of the hole. Don't skimp, don't try to make it pretty. The key is using more than you would think you would need.

Basically, I had problems with the silicone vulcanizing inside the tube it came in, and then it got everywhere the second time I used it and I was mad.

Ah!

They will harden if you let them sit for too long or don't re-cap them.

I've had that happen too. It sucks.

Get yourself a tube of regular silicone caulk. It works great.

I would scratch the surface with some sandpaper. It's not that hard and that way you don't risk it peeling off so easily.

tyvek envelopes from the post office:thumbup: I put five holes on my lids in the formation of the fifth side of the dice, usually I make the center hole a little bigger. This gives me the options of either innoculating through the four holes on the outside or just the middle hole, then just put some paper tape over the needle holes and your good.

I also dont like to use rtv silicone that much either because when its been a long day I end up bending at least one needle trying to find the hole:facepalm3: im sure i could just make bigger holes but I'll just stay away from the RTV alltogether.
