Outdoor Grow Mystery Mushroom

Hey everyone. So I've done a few successful outdoor cubensis grows and am attempting another one. I am using straw and manure, adding spawn and allowing to colonize. I cover everything up for a few weeks, allow mycelium to do its thing, and then allow fresh air as well as a bit of light in. So this particular patch has colonized and I am expecting fruits any day now. The thing is the fruits that are popping up look like this. (See attached pictures). They are coming up all over the patch and are very small blackish gray mushrooms with an oblong cap. Does anyone recognize them or had any experience with this? Kinda worried that their mycelium is overpowering the cubes. Any input appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Looks like the critters I see all over my horse pasture. Called Inkys I believe.
I'm sure someone over in the Hunting and ID forum can give you the full name, and confirmation that that's what they are.

I agree. My suspicion is coprinopsis radiata, and if you live on the west coast and they go to slime within a day you'll have your answer.

yes, thats exactly what they are. So should I be worried they are overtaking the cube mycelium? How does that work? I mean, I dont care if they pop up along with the cubes because I can easily seperate them, but might the coprinopsis radiata overtake the cubensis? They are popping up here and there all over the patch, so that tells me the mycelium is everywhere.

Yes, you should be worried they're overtaking the cubensis. It's entirely possible they are, and I have no idea if any cubes will pop up.
The super cool thing is that the edibility of that species is unknown, but some of them give you horrible horrible alcohol poisoning if you eat them and then have a beer the next day. Word on the street is that just about all coprinopses are delicious if you're a teetotaller, though. Please let us know if you eat one and then get alcohol poisoning, because if you do I'm totally putting that shit on wikipedia and mushroomobserver and emailing Michael Kuo about it.

Well not sure how 'super cool' that is but I think you're right about the overtaking of the cubes part. Won't be eating any of them so I won't be giving updates on the edibility but thanks for the input

You sure? Because if I could stay sober for three days straight I would eat the hell out of some coprinopsis. They're choice edibles, you know.
Plus, science is knocking on your door. You gotta answer, man.
Do it!!!

Just wondering if anyone on the west coast has had experience with this kind of mushie in their outdoor patch. My suspicion is that it has hijacked the patch, but don't want to tear it out and start over if the cubes stand a chance. I would think it may be a common problem, since this is a dung loving species as well, but would love to hear if anyone else has experienced maybe a symbiotic relationship between the two species in their outdoor grows. It really is a cool looking mushroom but not what I want popping up everywhere. I watched the cubensis mycelium colonize, so a bit confused as to why this is the only one poppin up.

Silly question I'm sure and not sure a vendor would have these spores but, how did u inoculate the sub? Did u order a syringe that mabey possibly have gotten mislabled. Or did the spores come from previous grow or used it before and got cubes? Just saying.

The spawn came from brf cakes that had fruited a few times. I crumbled them on the bottom of the bottom, center and top. Definitely was cube myc, and I saw it growing and conizing. The other mushroom must have been present in the manure or the straw. Just can't imagine how it could have taken over entirely, but I believe the little bastards have overtaken the cubes. Oh well, I'll start again.

I can confirm that straw that I used in an OD grow certainly had a culture of ink-caps. It is entirely possible this hitchhiked in with the straw. I left half a bale for a few weeks off the side, and it hatched a slew of ink-caps.
The funniest "hitchhiker" that I grew out this year was a hops plant. My Brother-in-law identified it moments before I pulled it. From what I read, hops is not just something that normally just pops up. I blame the manure, but its hard to blame when I got a stellar plant. Its even starting to flower right now. Oh the excitement of OD grows!
Good luck and I hope you get what you were cultivating at the least.

Nope, not really possible. Nobody grows these on purpose--psychoactivity is nil, edibility unknown.
