A great quick picture based ID resource
    #18765570 - 08/27/13 07:53 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I just found this  website while trying to narrow down my finds by photo. Seems like a really good place for people searching in the Great Lakes area, and beyond.

If this is your website, thank you.

Looking at the Gymnopilus, Pholiota, and Galerina are sections motivating me to get a microscope!

We spend all this time racking our brains over dense literature desperately trying to make sense of it.  Then after hours of hard work you finally find a name that fits perfectly, then someone just comes along and applies that name to their own vaguely similar finds while not bothering to learn that its a name no one has used since Smith described the type from California while not even having the guts to propose it at MO!

I kind of expected better from her. I guess there is a disclaimer at the top of each section...

This is actually pretty simulator to another issue that's been bothering me. A ton of my "could be" obs are showing up on dozens of sites as the unarguable photo of a given species. Im talking obs that are stuck in higher taxa limbo for eternity that have zero business being used to portray a species.

I love got a "Pholiota" obs from last year that is probably an Inocybe and some Mexican website was using it as a picture to describe the genus! I don't have time to rifle through the Internet at large asking sites to remove my mislabeled images. I can't stand that I am inadvertently responsible for perpetuating misinformation.

True, I didn't notice the disclaimer.  And I guess you can see what inspires the mass name changes, such as the ones myxomop does.

You guys do realize it is practically impossible to oversee all the information that is put on the internet. You could always try but I don't recommend it. I think having a cornerstone resource site like MO is a great way to standardize info from the web. What we need is a way to determine the credibility of a website easily.

The disclaimer also mentions being open to feedback. This is person who put a lot of time into the hobby, I say anyone with the genuine urge to provide feedback ought to.

MO is great but too slow for broad image reference from rural areas with poor internet connections.
