shiitake size and yields
    #18765089 - 08/27/13 05:44 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Does anyone know what causes small shiitake?

I had a nice pinset, but the majority of the mushrooms developed small, a few of the mushrooms became large.

The blocks were browned, stripped, sprayed daily, and maintained between 70 and 100 percent humidity. 12 /12 light.

I'm not much of a shiitake expert, but a little more info might help answer your question.

What strain are you growing?

What was your bag recipe? - Did you supplement?  How much?

How long from spawning to stripping the bag?

I just harvested my first ones on pasteurized fuel pellets with no supplementation and got one mega huge mushroom each block, the rest medium.

I'm also curious what affects the size of the mushrooms.  I thought it was mostly strain but I could be wrong.

Particular strain, and available moisture.

The mainj strain I work with kicks out fewer fruits at monster sizes.
The trick is, tweaking everything to push it to produce more monsters.

Another novel idea is to always make more than you think you'll need.
One will do better than another.

in my experience fewer pin make for a bigger mushroom.  a block of shiitake will only produce so much so if you want bigger mushroom then remove some of the pin.  that what I do when my little girl want giant mushroom.  hope this help.
