Another laptop thread

So I think it is about time to upgrade my laptop... Currently I'm working with a Dell Inspiron 1520 that I got back around in '07. I had upgraded a bit 3 years ago like the HDD to a HHD, more ram, windows 7 from vista, and processor, but eventually the HHD crashed so there went the ram/windows 7 64bit with it (i now have 32bit 7). The hinges for the screen both broke a little while back and now that im back at school I think it is time to get a new labtop.
So here are some of my current specs (and honestly they can manage everything I have thrown their way from DJ'ing to gaming) Resolution: 1280x800 15.4" Processor: intel core 2 duo T9500 @ 2.60 GHz Ram: 3.5 GB HDD: 5400 rpm with like 120GB of space graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT
My price range is pretty much less than 2000, but I would definitely prefer around 1000/1250. I would also prefer smaller than 15.4", but definitely no larger. I looked at the other two recent laptop threads, but im looking to get something a little higher powered than what was suggested. although this seemed like a pretty good laptop. I'm just so far out of the game im not sure what is even good anymore. I appreciate any suggestions (although I dont particularly want dell, hp, mac, or sony) and out of curiosity what do yall think of asus?

Well, we've already discussed the $1k/1.2k price point and it was the Lenovo Y400/Y500p.... That's the best bang for the buck for specs....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312835
I'd personally would never own this because a 6.5lb laptop is just never something I want to lug around...
My 15" retina mabook pro is 4.5lbs and I still don't want to lug it around lol.
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade
This would push the max of your budget and is definitely not the best bang for the buck in terms of hardware per dollar, but it's 4lbs 14" 1600x900 screen w/ gtx 765m & a 256gb ssd and a really nice aesthetic (IMHO)... That's what I'd get if I wanted a gaming laptop that still felt nice and portable.

haha, that razer is a bit over the edge for me. I havnt even played any computer games since diablo 3 was just released.
What do you think of this laptop in comparison to the other one you mentioned? http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/?sb=:000001C9:0000ED9C:
It does have 4 gb less ram, but I dont feel like that is a huge deal.
And it is smaller which I feel like it is probably nice to have a more portable laptop (especially since I am a student).
Edit: there are a couple different models http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/
I'm thinking about getting the second model. The main difference between the first 3 are. 1: bottom 2: increased resolution 3: increased resolution and added 24 GB SSD. would the SSD really be worth 70 bucks?

It's just heavier than I like, it's 5.5lbs..
I kind of like this laptop in terms of specs and weight @ $1200, this one has an i7 haswell, gtx 760m 1600x900 14" 4.4lbs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152409
that pound makes a nice difference, but at the same time lenovo is flat up a more reputable brand with outstanding warranty support
oh, and as for the lenovo that 24gb ssd for cache is not worth any additional money, just get a real ssd (DIY, samsung 840 or something)
this other MSI model for $1299 is the best of both worlds w/ a 128gb SSD & a 750gb HDD, the SSD will be big enough for your OS & your important apps, while you'll have the rotational HDD for all your media and apps you don't use so much etc.

Thanks for the help. I ended up going with the second model of that lenovo. I just didnt care to spend the extra ~300 for a pound less of weight, worse brand, and 1 step up on graphics. I appreciate the help, I feel like im definitely more knowledgeable than i was before

A buddy of mine got that exact laptop (the $829 one) and seems pretty happy with it. If you slap an SSD in it, I'm sure you'll be really happy with its speed. It looks like it has a free m-sata slot in, in which you could keep both the rotational hdd and it, but I think it's for some brand spanking new M.2 form factor, and I'm not sure the new SSDs haven't been released yet for it... There also should be an optical drive bay swap out for a 2.5" ssd too. Anyways, just something to think about, the 5400rpm drive is just way less than optimal as your OS drive, and if just general usage feels slow, load times for the OS and apps, the SSD will fix all of that.
