Need some advice on a weed grow.
    #18760315 - 08/26/13 04:19 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

This question is about how much air evacuation I need out of my exhaust fan.

So I have a bedroom in an apartment and I'm hanging a 1000w light (this one . . . http://www.gavita-holland.com/index.php/products/gavita-power-line-high-performance-lighting/item/gavita-pro-1000-de.html). ; The fan will be just hanging next to the light as close as I can get it and it will simply be sucking heat away from the light, no air cooled hood or anything.  So basically the fan will be doing two jobs, exhausting the humid air from the plants and sucking heat from the light, how much CFM will I need for this?

it depends on the size of the space and temperature of ambient air you're working with. Generally I say bigger is always better, so at least 700 cfm. Look up Can Max fans, they are designed for pulling air through a carbon filter, which you will also need for oder control.
you will need a dehumidifer to control humidity.

In this situation you would do better to blow than suck.

Well you should both blow and suck.

This doesn't answer your question but I get the five dollar desk fan , its four inches I believe, and I have it mounted behind my lamp in my hood pulling hot air out from behind the bulb. It is tiny, and fits right in there. I secure it with a lil clamp.  Then I direct that toward my bigger floor fan that pushes air out the room.  Helps keep the temp inside my hood down dramatically, so the tops of the plants wont get quite so hot.

Impossible to answer from the information given.  If the room needs heat the answer as to venting may be zero.  If you run CO2 and keep it warmer the answer may be zero.  If it's 100 degrees F outside and you vent 80 degree air and pull in 100 degree air the answer may be less than zero you just created an additional cooling load.

With the information given, I would place a few large oscillating fans in the room, this will help remove any hot spots and give you a good idea of how much cooling you will actually need. Unless you have a good air conditioner, I would highly recommend a light hood with an exhaust. One 1000w HPS can turn a 72 degree room into a 90+ pretty quick. Just keep in mind, a room full of 1-2' plants is going to create a different environment then a room full of 3-4' plants.

As for CFMs, it's typically recommended you want to be able to exhaust the entire room in about 3 minutes. How big is the room? A 10x10x10 would need a 333CFM exhaust fan.

Where are you venting the hot/humid air in the room?  going strait outside?  Are you using the fan to push/pull air through a carbon filter?

Just sayin'  if your venting outside, you may want to consider air filtration if you are concerned about stink..  If your keeping the room sealed, Id look into Co2 and sealing the room airtight and putting in one of those portable air conditioners.

If you are just putting up an oscillating fan(or typical household fan), then Id get two, one for the light and one for the plants.

Hope that helps, PM me if you have more specific questions you dont want to ask publically

I live on the California north coast ad it's actually a temperate rainforest here and right now it's *edit*80f outside which is the hottest it will get.  Its an upstairs room and it has a 4'x5' window in the room which I will be blacking out, and covering with a piece of plywood that has a flange for exhaust in it.  Just with outside air should be just fine so at some time it may be important to be able to lower the exhaust fan speed and use the lamp to actually keep the plants warm.

Damn, I'd love to live where you do!  I'm in Canada, we only get 5 months of non crappy weather lol.  Our summer is pretty awesome tho

But with that in mind, out here a grow room is kept between 70 and 80(f).  If the temp goes below 70, that's fine, just keep an eye on the plants.  I've see outdoor grow out here where the plants survived a frost because the farmer put up spray misters to keep the plants wet so they would not freeze.  I've also seen outdoor plants rebound after bad frost.  But I've never seen a plant recover from too much heat

Good idea with the plywood over the window.  A suggestion if you don't mind;  build a frame the same size of the window.  Stretch a black cloth over it.  Install that over the window so that from outside it looks like the room lights are just not on.  Then build the frame out about 2". Then put your plywood over that. I looks less suspicious, and disperses the heat leaving the room so it does not look so obvious from an infra red cam

Good luck with everything.  Practice makes perfect
