????!!!
    #18764023 - 08/27/13 01:50 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

i just got back from class.

i have 11 wbs quart jars colonizing.

last night i set them on the windowsill so the they can get adequet lighting.

when i picked up the jars the front of the glass was cold room temperature but the back of the jars facing the window were warm to touch.

is this bad for the myc.
will this kill it?

should i move them to a different location or should i just leave them there?

what are the temps in your room? if they are in the 70's put them in a corner or drawer somewhere. I don't recommend putting them next to a window if they are getting direct sunlight.

While still in jars they don't need lighting.  If you're worried about temperature, go buy 2 opaque tubs big enough to hold the lot of them (or 4 at a size that can hold half of them).  Keep them in the dark.  The purpose of the other tub is to fill it with water and put an aquarium heater in it.  Set it to ~80 degrees.  Then put the tub with the jars on top of the one with water in it.  Make sure the water is filled up just enough that when you put the other tub on top the water will go up the sides without spilling over.  Now when you turn on the heater it will be like an electric blanket all around your IC (incubation chamber).

Hope this helps. :smile::heart:

No need for an incubator those temps will work just fine. Also light on a 12/12 schedule during the whole process (indirect during colonization, and direct during fruiting) is beneficial.

Wait, you guys do lighting during colonization?  I haven't done this for years, since one of my first grows (did some indirect sunlight).  I always have my jars in a cupboard that gets practically zero light, and I'm getting to fully colonized in like 12 days from a MSS.

Also, 68 degrees seems way too low, I don't even drop temp that low in the fruiting stage.  It's not like it won't work, but according to my logs it colonizes much slower.

Yes, it helps develop a circadian rhythm.

At 68 degrees, the rate of growth will be slower than 76.
But room temperature is fine. No reason to push things too high, as it promotes bacterial growth.

Yea.. although people say light helps the myc its not detrimental.

Has anyone done side by side studies?

I'm on my ipod and I can't figure out how to post links from it (I'm kind of technology challenged and it doesn't make it any easier on an ipod). Just type it into the search bar or even in google.

TL's got you:thumbup:

Yes. Search RR's posts.
He has a lot of them stating his colonizing jars in the front reach 100% quicker than those in back, which is due to light.
Also, he uses isolates, so we know it's a true experiment.
